Ferrari 250 GTO / Pontiac GTO-powered
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Glad to have you aboard, sir. I hope you do. That's one of my favorite builds on this board. -
Not my cats, obviously, but this is sure to appeal to cat lovers in general...

Sweatpants are great around the house in cold months, light cotton drawstring pants or shorts when it's warm, but even at my advanced and hopelessly past-it age, I still make at least a little effort to dress before going out; never know when you'll cross paths with a hot granny standing at the prescription counter.

"Friend zoned" never happened to me, but then things were different during the time of the dinosaurs.

No need to buy new kits now
Ace-Garageguy replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Most of the builds I've done extensive WIP threads on here have been salvaged gluebombs, or literally someone's trash. -
"Not on my watch" is way overused by idiots trying to sound military or tough.

It won't do close through-the-window interior shots because you can't override the aotofocus, but for work like this, I'm still using an ancient 4-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L4 I bought new and have had forever. I bought a used backup in perfect shape not too long ago on feePay for about $25 shipped. You can get a perfectly fine used tripod at Goodwill or similar stores for under $25 too. And I believe the Nikon photo editing suite ViewNX2 is still a free download.

Auto metallics, grain size.
Ace-Garageguy replied to D.Pack's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I believe the older hobby paints, at least some of them, did indeed have finer metallic particles. I don't know why. I have HO scale rolling stock painted with golds and silvers over 50 years ago where the particles are so fine, you can't see them without magnification, yet they still have the characteristic "metallic" look. The Testors "one coat" was the most obvious giant-flake product of recent memory, looking like bass-boat or dune-buggy metalflake embedded in clear gelcoat. Tamiya metallics are much better, but often still too big for 1/24-1/25. Duplicolor colors labeled "mica" sometimes have almost acceptable flake sizes, though still on the large side. -

My primer smells like Bondo.....
Ace-Garageguy replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
To the best of my current knowledge, "weld-through primer" and "direct-to-metal primer" are different products for different specific applications. Note I said "to the best of my current knowledge". I'll be looking into it. -

I'd kinda think if el Kingo was walking the walk he talks, the coach now would be something more like this, but with batteries instead of ICEs.

I watched the King and Queen-ish come out on the balcony, and all I kept thinking was "does this mean there'll be six more weeks of winter?"

My primer smells like Bondo.....
Ace-Garageguy replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Probably be fine, possibly easier. It's permissible to put fillers over the "professional" bodyshop rattlecan DTM primers (at least that's the current understanding from the paint reps here). EDIT: Scuffing the surface with 180 grit is recommended before filler is applied if the DTM primer is fully dry. EDIT 2: DTM rattlecan primers are very helpful in a bodyshop, as small areas of "open" metal work (bare steel) can be easily protected from flash rusting using the rattlecan product, as opposed to having to mix and spray a two-part product like PPG's DP epoxy, which takes additional time and can raise material cost and the potential for waste significantly. -
My primer smells like Bondo.....
Ace-Garageguy replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You have aroused my curiosity, so I'll be trying some myself. The primary stink from polyester resin (the liquid part of "bondo") is styrene monomer, and there are regulations regarding its atmospheric release under industrial conditions. Styrene-monomer is a major component of polyester resin, and can be used as a thinner for polyester-resin-based products, like bondo, in small quantities. I see the product above is marked as "direct to metal" (DTM). DTM rattlecan primers are fairly newish in the consumer market, and they do smell different, though I haven't ever looked into the chemical makeup (we use them frequently under spot repairs and on small fabrication jobs in the body shop). I'll be investigating further... -
Cat-Women of the Moon is a cinematic masterpiece that shouldn't be missed.

Odd Place to Find Models
Ace-Garageguy replied to Calb56's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
How about sweaty velvet Elvises that have been used as ponchos?
