I started recommending people scuff, primer and practice spraying small soda bottles years ago, after seeing how many folks got good results painting spoons, but ended up with horrible orange peel, grainy dry-spray, or runs when they tried to transition to shooting model car bodies. Painting a spoon is nothing like painting a model, but boy, did I catch a lot of flack for bucking the "expert" advice. Not everyone has a stash of junk bodies to practice on, and a small soda bottle is large enough to develop the skills and coordination required to overlap paint passes correctly to keep a "wet edge" while turning the subject being painted, and to learn to hold that fine line between running and flowing out into a nice glossy surface.

  4. The 914 platform is a natural for V8 swaps too. There are a lot with smallblock Chebbys, and this one is getting an LS6.

  6. Another factory hot-rod was the 916. With the roof panel mounted permanently to the structure to stiffen it, the car has a host of other mods. (Beware: lotsa fakes around.)
  7. And Gemballa's spin on the 918, though a little busy for my personal taste...well, I could suffer through owning this.
  8. I like some of the Strosek body mods...(they generally get the proportions right, MUCH better than the bubble top thing that opened this thread; that roof is horrible).
  9. 100% agreed. They're great carbs, very tunable, simple, and easy to get parts for.
  10. I'm posting this in the "general" cars section because, though these are mostly aircraft engines, they HAVE been used in LSR vehicles, pulling tractors, etc. And engines is engines.

  12. I guess I should have mentioned the flip side, with some 1/24 engines being as much as 1/8" longer than the same thing represented in 1/25, and visibly much larger than their 1/25 counterparts. Math is hard. (And I've seen two of the same engines in the same supposed scale from the same manufacturer also showing almost a 1/8" discrepancy. Math is really hard.)
  13. Agreed. And interestingly, several of the "1/24" engines measure out extremely close to their 1/25 counterparts from other manufacturers...identical in some instances.
  14. Probably makes a pretty decent car. The LS shouldn't be much heavier than the 944 engine, is semi-bulletproof...and neatly sidesteps the 944 engine's servicing nightmares.

  17. Another design I did for a client. Was to have been a 904-influenced 914 kit car. Project terminated twice due to financial disagreements, taken to another shop, bodged by hackers, never finished. Note my sig and date on the pencil sketch. I did the first design work on this thing in the early '90s, was booted from the project in favor of somebody who worked cheaper...but didn't have a clue as to HOW to do it. I was brought back in years later after the proportions had been changed and spoiled, the "kit" turned out to be virtually unbuildable, parts wouldn't come out of the molds (no draft angle or correctly designed sections), side-to-side symmetry was WAY off, etc. Photos show the car at the basement shop under my last house, in the process of returning it to my original design. NOTE: All my assertions are verifiable. I have the original design sketches and drawings, plus the originals and negatives of the photos shown. I also have the police report filed when the car was stolen from my shop by someone acting for the client, video tapes, and a full set of splash molds. Not my best work, but warping a 904 on to 914 proportions ain't easy.

  19. Back in the late '60s or early '70s, the hot rod mags featured two Porsche projects that always stuck in my mind. One was an early 911 Speedster, built WAY before it occurred to the factory. Silver car with big racing stripes. I remember the builder said he went through several cut-down windshields before he figured out how to do it without breaking. The other was a Toronado-powered 911 coupe. Engine in the back seat, used the Toro gearbox and diff too. Had a fake leather-upholstered "fitted luggage" fiberglass engine cover.
  20. LS power is becoming a popular swap into the mid-engined Caymans and Boxters as well. Makes a great car. But this is sacrilege.
