looking for Ferrari 512 help
Monty replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ken, most of the time I use Google when I need reference pictures, but occasionally I strike out. That's when I try Yahoo Images. These pics may be of some help. http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=ferrari%20512s&ni=20&b=81 -
1) In the 60s, Ford had a color called Candy Apple Red. Despite the name, it wasn't a "candy" color like this: Is there a hobby paint that duplicates that shade of red? 2) Teal - one definition I saw said "a greenish-blue". In your Crayola 64-pack, the color I want is Green-Blue, but Testors' enamel and acrylic teals are more of a Blue-Green. Here's kind of a starting point: Is there a hobby paint that duplicates that shade? TIA for all helpful replies.

Thanks, Dave!

That dark green really works on that car. As for the BMF, it looks like you did a great job without it by just using silver paint. That takes a steady hand, too. Can you show us any chassis or engine shots?

Bill, any thoughts on doing the wheel arches or pinstripes? Those are going to be my main concerns.

These are some of my favorite C3s. I have the kits to reproduce them, but I'm not confident that I have the right tape etc to mask off the two-tone features, especially the wheel arches. If you look closely, you'll see that each car features pinstripes, which I'll need help replicating as well. I'd appreciate any tips, product recommendations, procedures, whatever you have.

I can't wait to see how this build progresses. The '69 Mach 1 is my favorite muscle car evarrrrr. If memory serves, this is a 1/25 scale kit, so you should be able to find a good FE replacement engine among your other kits. I'm also a huge fan of 5-slots and Radial T/As, so the AARI stuff is a perfect addition to this kit. If you figure out a way to fix the angle of the front grille, let the rest of us know. It's one of the things that's keeping me from completing this kit.

Gotta agree with this 100%. All the effort you're putting into detailing the chassis will be overshadowed by that patch of lettering. Hope you're feeling better.

I've got this Revell thing sitting in my "rainy day" stack. It has ejector pin marks on everything - shocks, radiator, you name it. I don't mind doing "prep work" but this one will require a week's worth of fill-file-and-shape drudgery before I even get started building it. Just thought of a new term for kits like this - Glue virgin!

Seems like SA(E) did an article on this kit years ago. Unless my memory is faulty, I believe they said the body was from a snap kit issued by Airfix. I think they used the Monogram '78 T/A for chassis, engine & etc. Let's see if the board's kit historians chime in.

Apparently I missed a memo. While sniffing around on ebay last night, I saw AMT kits (ex: 32 Ford Vicky) with a black, silver and red DTR insigina where the old AMT insignia used to be. What's up with that?

Nick, those wheels look sharp on your R/R, but as others have pointed out, they're meant to emulate a 1:1 stamped steel wheel instead of the aluminum wheels I was asking about. Look at the depth of the slots in the first picture (Ansen Sprint) and compare it to those in the second picture. Admittedly, wheel selection for a real car (or model) can be subjective, but in this case I was looking for a rather specific wheel to achiefve a certain "look".

I ended up with some of these when I was trying to find some Gunze Sangyo acrylic paints. The on-line description said "acrylic" (technically they're right, but it's a solvent-based acrylic). Eventually I learned I should've been looking for the word "aqueous". Anyway, I apparently now own paints that may require a proprietary reducer. Do I have to bite the bullet and buy the Mr Hobby thinner or will something else work as well? If you've painted anything with these, please post pics, comments etc.

In the attached picture you'll see a silver flex tube arching over the valve cover and extending up to the bottom side of the air cleaner snorkel. In real life, this piece is about 2" in diameter. The MPC kit I'm using has a piece that's meant to depict this, but besides being too thin, it looks more like a chromed tube and nothing like a flex-hose. Yes, I'm aware that the "flex" part might be hard to depict in scale, but I gotta try. Enlighten me!

Porsche Topic!!! anything porsche!
Monty replied to B_rad88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There only seems to be one model of my favorite Porsche, but I wouldn't bother chasing one down. For some reason the 'tards at AMT, in their infinite wisdom, decided to tool up a 917/10, but relegated it to 1/32 scale. Can you imagine what could have been done with this car in 1/25 scale? -
Great work! Can you tell me what you did to make the headlights stand out. Most MPC headlights seem to blend into the chrome around the grille, but yours look more realistic.

Looking for a particular thread
Monty replied to Monty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I did a search using "pin vice" but didn't find the thread. -
In the last 2-3 months or so, I came across a thread that may have started off as a demonstration of how to drill out a distributor cap (kit part and sprue-made). The author also showed how to make 90* plug wire boots to go into the cap. Someone in the thread eventually asked for advice on where to buy the best pin vice at the best price which resulted in some great links to various vendors. I assume the thread was in the Tips & Tricks section, but my "search" came up empty. Help?
