Fair enough, I stand corrected. I thought they retired the Boyd line years ago, and it admittedly surprises me that they'd bring them back out as acrylics. That's good news to me 'cuz I liked a lot of the colors in that line. Here's the weird part: I can't seem to find any reference to these Boyd's acrylic paints even on the Testors site, but I've already been shown to have been wrong once.
-
Maybe I missed something but I'm curious what actual paint you're using. Testors/Model Masters did offer a Boyds Red at one time, but it was an enamel. To the best of my knowledge, they never offered it as an acrylic. Got a close-up of the bottle with a P/N or other identifier? That said, the work going into this is outstanding.
-
Yup. I'd love to see a lot more of your work on this too. Also, if you wouldn't mind sharing, what exact paint did you use on the body? It really stands out.
-
Agreed. Love that color too. How far are you going to go as far as chassis and engine detailing are concerned? Here's a question I'd like your opinion on: How hard do you think it would be to turn this kit body into a convertible? As a kid, one of my favorite cars was our '69 Ford XL convertible. White, blue interior & blue convertible top & a 390. I'm new to this kind of thing, but I'd guess the trunk lines would be the first thing I'd need to address.

I'll be the first to acknowledge the generosity of this board's membership as I've been the beneficiary of it a couple times in the past. I've also seen you guys reach out to help untold numbers of other builders with parts and other essentials at no cost to them. While that is admirable, I'd just like to "legally" ask another member if they'd consider a cash offer, and if so, what they'd consider a fair offer for parts and shipping. In this scenario, I would offer payment first to grease the skids and alleviate any doubt as to my reliability. As for the PIF concept, it's a remarkable idea...if you have a stash of parts, which I don't.

You and I obviously had vastly different experiences with these paints. After the usual prep (shaking/stirring etc), my Testors enamel bottled paint s/g black had a much lower shine, while the Tamiya acrylic bottled paint was almost glossy enough to use as a top coat. As I said before, I consider that a good thing given the various shades of black you'll encounter on many cars.

I wish we could have that officially spelled out in the rules so it wouldn't be an issue. Who do we ask about that? Gregg?
-
My apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I didn't know where else to put it. There are a number of parts I'd like to have to finish certain builds based on a specific design I had in mind, but I don't have much in the way of a parts stash to use in a trade. The rules, as Harry et al wrote them, say outright purchasing is verboten, and the price of kits and shipping is too high just to obtain an item or two. If I could find what I want on ebay, I wouldn't be posting this. Is a cash purchase really that big a deal if both sides are OK with it?

The amount of gloss in semi-gloss black paints can vary between manufacturers, which is actually a good thing since seats, batteries and suspension components may require slightly differing finishes to look accurate. For example, Testors semi-gloss blacks aren't as glossy as Tamiya s/g jar paint (and I assume their spray cans). Some people also use s/g black spray paints from home improvement centers with good results. Long story short, all of these paints are very affordable and it wouldn't hurt to have a selection on hand instead of relying on one shade for everything.

Gotta love it when someone takes a simple 2-wire-axle car and just knocks it outta the park. This was a favorite kit of mine back in my early building days. I was crazy about the car's looks, the optional Hurst wheels AMT tossed in, and that big ol' FE engine. Mine came out OK but nothin' like this. Love that red interior and the way the white paint flowed out perfectly. Very well done.

Very nice work! Question: This pic seems to indicate that the build has poseable wheels. Did it come that way or did you do some mods to make it happen?
-
I always look forward to seeing builds of this kit since I think of it as one of Lindberg's best efforts. Nice work on yours & kudos for casting the hubcaps you needed to achieve the look you wanted. I don't know if you did any suspension mods but the stance looks terrific (so many kits sit "high" unless tweaked). I've seen numerous builds of this kit on here over the years and I don't recall anyone else having the issue you did with the support piece, so I'm hoping someone can chime in and clarify the issue for any future builders.

Scale Auto back issues - yikes!
Monty replied to Monty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Granted, but if you saw the link, they're saying these are available @ 50% off. Were they originally charging $14.00 - $18.00 a copy? -
I kinda like the MPC C3 chassis because they have poseable front wheels, independent rotating half-shafts and fairly good hard line engraving. Whichever small block engine I end up using will get the fuel injection setup from the AMT kit unless there's a better one out there for the '63s (seems like the FI units changed slightly year to year).

Did a quick Google search for Scale Auto back issues and found a link to Kalmbach's Fakebook page which said the issues were 50% off. https://www.facebook.com/ScaleAutoMagazine/posts/50-off-scale-auto-back-issues/1278028428901437/ Prices seem to range from $6.99 - $8.99 an issue. Are these prices what they mean by 50% off or did I miss something?

P/P, thanks for posting this. I originally saw it when you responded in a WIP thread, and the novelty of your procedure intrigued me. Once I saw the pic of the red interior, it made me think you were on to something that someone else might find beneficial.

Along the same line, I can't be the only one who's tired of seeing posts and articles written by people who are seemingly incapable of pluralizing a noun without using an apostrophe. I have no doubt the internet helped spread this idiocy, but it still comes down to dimwits and the poorly educated perpetuating it. I've also seen a number of instances where the writer used apostrophes to pluralize certain words while using the correct way on others. I'd love to see the flow chart that helped them make that decision.

I followed your WIP thread and enjoyed seeing your efforts come to fruition. Very nice work.

There's a lot to like here but the two things that really stick out to me are the paint (great color and perfectly applied too) and the hand-painted bed. Question: the "owner" bought all that Edelbrock Elite series engine dress-up stuff, but ran a stock manifold? : ) Good stuff, man.

This was the car my dad had. Silver, black half roof, white interior, red carpet and dash. It had incredibly soft leather seats, and a 400 cid engine that, despite the best efforts of several mechanics, would not get above 14 mpg. I may still make an attempt at a full-detail (chassis, engine etc) build from this kit, but I have no idea what to do about those wheel covers. To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing even close out there.
-
My dad had a silver '77 Monte Carlo which I hope to duplicate some day using this kit, but I want to use a better chassis so I can install an engine etc. AFAIK no one seems to have done this. I'll be interested to see what all you do with yours.

Kudos for not only finding an exterior color that looks like it could've been offered by Pontiac in 1970, but also for coming up with an attractive, realistic-looking interior. Growing up, our family had several friends who were avid Pontiac fans because of the quality and performance they offered. Sad that the brand is no longer around.

Anybody got a release date? I didn't see anything on Round 2's site about it.
-
I remember building this kit as a kid and liking it. Years later, I tried to find another one through the usual sources, but couldn't justify paying what sellers were asking for it. Never thought I'd see it released again, but I'm happy to know it'll be back soon. Anybody know if it has the same wheel issue as the Blazer kit (5-lug wheels on one axle & 6-lug wheels on the other)?
