What's the deal with Johan
gtx6970 replied to Kaleb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My hats off to you. And here I thought I was obsessed . I might have between 40 and 50 if I count unbuilt and builders alike. Most of what interests me are muscle car era subjects, and IMO, Johan was at the top of the game then. Even today when you compare them to modern tooled kits they are still at the the top for the most part. As an example the look at the AMT 1969 GTX versus Johans 1969 GTX kit , there is no comparison -
Or these

Thanks for the notes. I've always been facinated by and have always enjoyed seeing the Big touring cars of the late 20's to early 30's . And I bought a sealed MPC 1932 Chrysler a few years ago. But I would like to get several more while the mood strikes me for future builds someday. The 1/24th - 1/25th scales are a must. Something like these have caught my attention, especially the Imperial. being a Mopar fan might have something to do with that To be honest, I don't need high end detailed kits, but I want something that if it's supposed to be a 1933 Imperial kit, it darn well better look like that once assembled and on the shelf. So I'm not after the 'having wire your own wheels' kits, just something nice without taking out a second mortage

I am having an interest in some of the early 30s kits to build somewhere down the road if for nothing but a change of pace. Such as Cadillacs, Packards, Duesenbergs etc. Is there any particular version to avoid or that would be the 1st choice to build. ?

Lindberg 1964 Superstock Dodges - 2 at once ? oh why not.
gtx6970 replied to gtx6970's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I'm still trying to determine 100% of the interior colors of the 2 cars. I think the Strickler/Dodge Boys car was red interior and 4 spd and the Oldfield / Iron Butterfly car was tan interior and auto Anyone able to confirm one way or the other ? -

The intended subjects. -
With my renewed interest in building agian, I decided to tackle 2 at once. Both basically the exact same kit, just different decals and One an automatic and the 2nd a 4 speed car. I got them sanded and in primer yesterday, then painted and cleared this morning. Duplicolor white with U-POL clear on top.

What's the deal with Johan
gtx6970 replied to Kaleb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I happen to big a BIG fan of the old Johan kits. Some might say I might have gone a bit overboard. This is just the unbuilt stuff. I have at least another 2 dozen builders of various kits in the stockpile,,, mostly original late 60's and early 70's annuals ( don't ask, none are for sale at this time ) I will agree it seems some of the kits released towards the end you could tell the tooling was getting sloppy. But Johan did kits no one else would touch. And they were hands down the most accurate bodies of the day( still are for the most part) just look what the Johan 1969 Road Runner kits bring, when the AMT 1969 GTX kit is so easily modifed to replicate the same car. -

Some Old War horses from days gone by ( OLD Builders )
gtx6970 replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Cars
Thanks fellas Believe me, I've attempted several times to take them apart for a redo, But I always just end up dusting them off , maybe reglue some small loose parts and then just put them back on the shelf. So deep down I know they will stay just the way they are. As far as Ebaying them ? . not a chance,,,,,,,,,,,, these are not for sale . They're probably the worst condition cars on my dispaly shelf, but they are easily the ones that get the most attention when friends see them. -

Last but certaintly not least. Original MPC 1972 Duster. Arlen Vanke kit. This is another one with said same raided underhood details, and the original kit decals . Comments are welcome and actually encouraged. For all the old timers reading this, If you have builders from your youth that survived the firecrackers and lighter fluid days,,,,,,, PLEASE show them off with pride. Thanks again. -

Next, the Johan 'Fast Eddie ' Schartman Comet stocker. I think its painted in cheap testors yellow and original kit decals. With the afore mentioned ' raided ' underhood detail supplies. Although I don't consider myself a Ford/Mercury fan,, this is one of my favorites and I bought it exactly the way you see it , maybe ???? 10 years ago . As Old race cars are where my main interests lie. Plus,,,This one just looks 'cool' . -

Another MPC Don Carlton Pro stock kit. This time the 1972 Cuda kit. Body is molded in black plastic and unpainted . Interior was poorly hand painted in some kind of nasty looking yellow. I think I may have to change that some day soon though.Otherwise it's built 100 % right out of the box and actually makes decent looking piece on the shelf. -

MPC Don Carlton Duster pro stock kit. Painted in some kind of dull black, the hood fits like ###### and I think I may have to raid the parts box to fix that missing tail light though. This one I think has Fred Cady decals on it, although I'm not 100% certain either way -
The old guys here might appreciate these. These are all old builders I've picked up over the last 10-12 years in hopes to redo some day. Problem is, I can't bring myself to take them apart. I take them off the shelf once in a while to take them aprt and redo them,,,, but end up just wiping off the dust and put them back. They're far from prefect and the pictures make them look so much better than they really are. But they have character and in my mind shows how well( or lack of ) built cars back before we had all the nice detail supplies of today. Window trim is simple silver brush paint. For spark plug wires / engine wiring , we raided moms sewing box for different color thread. For fuel lines and battery cables , we raided dads tool chest for some thin wire. I can't take credit for any of them , all were bought exactly the way you see them here. I don't think any were from the same sellers. So I guess we just all had similar styles and actually had to do some thinking to set ourselves apart from all our building buddies. None are perfect, and since my ownership i've tried to clean them the best I can without damaging decals or details, The ones with window trim and wiper blades highlighted are done with silver paint. There is no bare metal foil on any of them . Enjoy 1st off the original MPC Sox and Martin Duster. This one doesn't have an engine in it. maybe some day it will again. Other than the roof and hood scoop none of the body is painted, it's all kit decals.
