made the trip over to our local Hobby Lobby today, surprised to find MANY empty slots on the kit aisle. Not simply cars, most of the military stuff gone, few semis left..... it occurred to me that HL might have cleared out some older stuff and put it out on clearance, but this wasn't the case, they simply didn't have much stock on hand. Went online and found that, except for new releases, there's not much depth in inventory anywhere. E-bay was more of the same, lots of relatively new stuff with some older material sparsely interspersed. Not sure what to make of this, it might be nothing at all. Just an observation.

Same here ,  but no kits in the clearance section,  there is nothing to be worried about, what the empty shelves mean is they are getting ready to do a reset and will be stocking new kits coming out.

Posted

You can blame me Curt, I was in there at the beginning of the week and bagged 3 clearance kits!

Yep, it is that time of year at Hobby Lobby. I have come across some bargains and have been taking advantage of clearance kits. I have added 5 of the Revell 63 Convertible snap kits, love those wheels and that kit looks great when done, it's a quick build and perfect slump buster. I also scored a couple of AMT 66 Grumpy Novas- great selection of parts in that kit! I have been surprised at what has been on clearance, some Foose kits, musclecars and drag cars.

Id just be happy once ours gets something in automotive...ours the shelves just shrink while the military,die-cast grows...???  If and when they do get anything different in its about a year behind.  I am almost to the point where I think there is no reason to go look there now...there not going to have it thing.

Yes, Hobby Lobby is a little slow at getting the new models in.

Ours is painfully slow if they show up at all and most don't...with 40% off coupon I can afford to shop there if they ever get anything...been over 6 months since anything different has shown up here...you all are lucky to have a place where they do show up at.

Hobby Lobby only resets their stock once or twice a year so they can't keep up with the latest releases like a regular hobby shop. They also can't/ won't stock every release. Same thing for Michael's and the Wal Marts that do carry model kits. I have seen all 3 of them have kits on clearance right now, though none of them have anything I have felt the need to pick up.

On Facebook I did see someone post that they bought a 57 Del Rio at HL so I'll wait for my local store to get one @40% off.

I have to agree but every area is different. The store i use changes or resets in July. So the shelves are empty almost. So every thing will be newer kits anytime now. I would like to score a kit once in a while for 40 o/o off but i order from modelround up if i need something...

You have to befriend the person in charge of that aisle. Schmooze him or her if possible and you'll see an improvement.

My ex showgirl type who runs the department at the Henderson HL is always willing to try and order new stuff.

What can you lose?

I have tried G...he says they never know what they will get in and its up to corporate.  Id order on line from those other places but its a funds issue for me...cost of the kit and shipping adds up fast and my budget is pretty poor to work with.

They don't 'stock' kits at the store.....inventory sitting in a back room cost money. If you notice kits come in big returnable containers from a central warehouse.

One thing I have noticed at HL visits is I am not alone on the model kit isle any longer.......empty shelves may be GOOD news.....

why do posters here quote a long block of text just to add "thanks"? not to criticize too much but its almost as bad as quoting huge blocks of photos...probably worse because at least then you got to look at the photos. Again. and again.

I personally hate hobby lobby and I have only been there once. its the Walmart of models and that's not good. and this quasi religious staying closed on sunday business...what is that some kind of throwback to the bible belt 50s? everything about the place irritates me...the staff at the place I went couldn't seem to care less, the stock was a joke, prices were a joke, and the whole thing just reminded me of a cattle drive. guess this is one for what irked me today  but its not just today. maybe it would be better if the one I went to had a "showgirl type" but they were pretty much all church ladies and gentlemen.

give me a real LHS or, barring that, the internet.

True, but when you consider 40% off, plus (usually, for me) no tax, even with the cost of shipping included, can still be a good deal.

Perhaps they haven't yet figured out the default behavior of the new software, can be edited as required/desired.

I'm thinking that Hobby Lobby may be doing a little down sizing, at least around here. One larger store that I have been going to for several years is closing and they have a sign posted that they were relocating to a new store in another part of town. There is a second store a few miles away that I had not visited for 6 months or more, when I drove by last week they were closed and the store was cleaned out. I don't know when that happened, but it used to be always busy when I visited in the past. The store that they have at the south end of town is still going, but I think I may try to find this new one they are now opening. I'm afraid that Hobby Lobby like so many other retailers are just forced to reduce their number of retail stores in order to stay open. Not a good sign for our economy.

Ya, I've never had a reason to go to Hobby Lobby.  I'll stick w/ real hobby shops and the internet to source models and supplies.
