om617
Hello. Where do i start searching for realistic looking "fuel filters"? I do not have old electric equipment i can use as donor. Maby there is any online shop who offers in the right size and do maby sell a batch of 10 or 20? I`m not sure what the electric components are called in English,so if anyone could give a tip on what search words to use, maby at Ebay or such it would be great. Thanks. Ace-Garageguy
"Carbon resistors" are frequently used to represent in-line filters. These are obviously about 9mm long, a little too large (depending on scale, of course) but this design is usually VERY cheap and available in quantity. blunc
diodes and resistors are a couple of the most common items used to replicate fuel filters, some general purpose diodes have a glass shell.
om617
Thanks for the suggestions. Seen some who kinda look like they are transparant and have color inside, looks like real petrol filters. Bill: The size would be 1:24/1:25 scale kits. crazyjim
Search for hex shaped beads. I use ones that are clear but I dab some Tamiya transparent yellow into the holes. Get your fuel line, position a # Beadalon crimp tube, fuel filter, another crimp tube. Bing bang done. Here's a pic.
om617
Looks very nice Jim. How do i know the correct size for this? If i remember right the fuel lines have the measurement 1,25mm
10thumbs
Hi Tommy, an old PC mouse has "fuel filters" the size you need. Some nice wires and other automotive electrical things in 1:25 there too.
SSNJim
Check out the 1N4148 or 1N914 switching diode. Most electronics stores will have them in stock at a very reasonable price. Edited September 6, 2015 by SSNJim
crazyjim
I usually use 22 gauge wire for fuel lines. I'm trying to find the packing slip from when I ordered the beads. That should have the particulars on it.
disabled modeler
I have used small resistors that are clear with tiny lines colored on them before...looks pretty decent.

You might have seen the ready made filters offered by some after market companies. I just buy a couple occasionally from Model Roundup. They carry the "Preston's Car Parts" filters with the filters & fuel lines ready to use. More expensive than scrounging for your own, but less fooling around. disabled modeler
Yep those look just like the ones I have used before.

More expensive than scrounging for your own, but less fooling around. Steve These are perfect. I`ll take a look at Model Roundup and see if the have in stock. Never heard about Preston before, this is brilliant. Thanks for all the suggestions and tips guys.
SSNJim
The Preston's items are not resistors, those are the diodes I was talking about. Ace-Garageguy posted a picture of resistors.
Tom Geiger
Here's two of those diodes used as fuel filters. Preston didn't make those, they merely bought a big bag of diodes and packaged them. I got a bag of 20 or 50 many years ago at Radio Shack, aka a lifetime supply! disabled modeler
yep that is the ones I use Tom...they work very well.
om617
Well.i tried add to chart and Model Roundup wanted $28 for First Class shipping, excuse me but that is ridiculous. A similar size 5pack wired distributors from Ebay is no more then $6 for the same shipping method.
blunc
I paint the ends of my diode "fuel filters" to better match the appearance of the fuel filters I have experienced.
BigTallDad
Shrink several layers of (insulating) shrink vinyl on a piece of wire, then square off the ends with an Xacto. Paint as desired.
StevenGuthmiller
I should have guessed that shipping costs would have been prohibitive to Norway Tommy. Here's a tip for you. It would be quite easy to make your own. Take a piece of clear sprue & heat it slightly, then stretch it to the desired thickness. cut it about an inch long & drill a hole through the center of it lengthwise. Then just cut it to the desired length, smooth the ends with a little sanding, thread your wire through & paint it with some "turn signal amber" paint. I also like Mikes idea of painting the ends silver. You could cut out the middle man & start with clear amber sprue as well. I think I'm going to start making my own after I use up the ready made ones I have left. I'm confident I could make one in about 10 minutes. disabled modeler
Find and check with a local electronics parts store....there cheap if you have one there.
Longbox55
Thanks for the suggestions. Seen some who kinda look like they are transparant and have color inside, looks like real petrol filters. Bill: The size would be 1:24/1:25 scale kits. Just a little note, most OEM fitment fuel filters, especially on '60s and newer, are solid metal cans, rather than being clear glass/plastic. The clear inline filters you see are pretty much always aftermarket items. Now, for the older sediment bowl type used '50s and earlier, I do seem to recall a tip posted a while back that used an LED to make them. om617
Many good ideas here. There are tons of these on Ebay, and like $1 dollar for 500 with free ship from China, the problem is i dont know the how many millimeters they are. Did try send some messages if they bother measure
SSNJim
The package is DO-35 (Variant AH). See the following page for dimensions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DO-
Longbox55
Is this the type filter you're trying to replicate? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-9747?seid=srese2According to their specs, it's 4.2" long, 1.070" diameter.
