Scale-Master Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) A re-issue of the 1970 Tom Daniel Monogram kit. I never had one as a kid so when I won this kit as a prize at a recent model contest I decided to dive right in. Immediately I knew I’d use some vintage Testors Metal-Flake Ruby Red. In 24 hours I was able to get the all the body parts painted and decaled and a few other little parts cleaned up for assembly. Edited April 18, 2018 by Scale-Master
Monty Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I can't wait to see what you do with this. Decades ago my best friend got one for Christmas. He mistakenly thought he could make his look like the box art without doing anything (painting or clearing) to the body. Are you thinking of updating the wheels & tires?
Scale-Master Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 This one will be straight out of the box with a few minor paint changes. I plan to paint the louvers black instead of leaving them red as the box art shows. Maybe I'll do something to make the wheels look less toy-like.
disabled modeler Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 NICE....! I always liked these show rod kits...still do there fun to build and make nice models. I missed a few as a kid too but doubt Ill ever find or afford them now...maybe they will re-issue them someday.
John Pol Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 It would be neat if someone would cast the chopper by it self
Junkman Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Woah! But, but, but... the wheels MUST look toy like and they MUSTN'T look less toy like, because Tom Daniel.
Roadrunner Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Real nice. I'd like to eventually find some of the old Tetors metalflakes myself. My original '32 Ford Phaeton from when I was a kid, was painted Sapphire Blue if I recall.
Helper Monkey Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I love that paint. I bet that old bottle of paint is awesome.
John Teresi Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 (edited) Mark......looks great so far.....paint is flawless using "Testors" ......how old is that bottle of Testors?.....that little bottle went a long way Edited September 11, 2015 by John Teresi
Scale-Master Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 That bottle of Ruby Red is at least 30 if not 35 years or more old. It was a virgin and I used 98% of it on this model. Last night I did a little touch up and used one more percent.
Mike Chernecki Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Looks great! What do you thin the old Testors with? And how was it cured enough to allow you to apply decals within 24 hours? Is it cleared?
Scale-Master Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 I used lacquer thinner to cut it, and it is in the mid-90s here. I decaled it a little more than 12 hours after painting the red. I cleared it about 8 hours after that. Here it is after being waxed this morning.
Davewilly Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Looks great! built one as a kid....dont know where it went.....but I have a kit in the stash to build again sometime.
charlie8575 Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Very nice paint work. That color is still in production, but as we know all too well, the quality of what was there once is much lower for whatever reason.Did you use a primer or shoot right on the plastic?Charlie Larkin
Brett Barrow Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Testors still makes 1529 Metalflake Red. I don't know if it's different than the old paint, though. I'm sure the formula has changed, but I don't know if the color has changed. That looks really cool. Perfect color for the Cherry Bomb!
Scale-Master Posted September 12, 2015 Author Posted September 12, 2015 I think the chemical formula of the enamel is different. Whether it is better or worse depends on who you talk to. I think the Stop Light Red actually looks like it has more flake. But I wanted an excuse to use the older paint. The chrome on the wheels was too much to me and part of the toy-like appearance I wanted to tone down. I painted the recessed portions of the wheels with a flat metallic light gray I mixed from Tamiya acrylics.
Scale-Master Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 Thanks, and you were asking in the Corvette thread about this one John... The days are getting shorter… Less light to shoot in. The wheels and suspension are plugged into the bottom of the car and I “installed” the chrome “engine” after a little hand detail painting of the one piece turbine.
John Teresi Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Mark......I was wondering what happened to this .......I really like what your doing with this one.......best one I`ve ever seen.......I grew up with all those Tom Daniel`s creations.......I use to have them all when I was a kid........I just thought they were so cool.......I have them all again and have built a few of them......I want to dig out my Dragon Wagon and do a number on it.........Very cool Mark.......I dig it!!!!!
Scale-Master Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 Have you seen Vince LoBosco's Dragon Wagon from a couple years ago ( I saw it at a GSL)? Best I have ever seen, as is his Tijuana Taxi.
