Porscheman Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Just Started another one. This time an AMT 59 Mercury Convertible. After 24 hours in Purple Power, I primed it with Tamiya Grey Primer and then 4 coats of of Testors Flame Red and Tamiya Gloss Black in the coves. I finished it off with 3 coats of Testors Wet Look Clear. I'm not sure if I want red or black or a 2 tone interior. Any suggestion on the interior are greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking. GMCMAN52 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Nice save, I like the two tone color for your interior
Bill J Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Looking great. The 59 Mercury convertible was the first automobile model kit I ever bought, in 1959 it was amazing to me
Tom Geiger Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Hey Al! Looks good so far! What are you planning for the bumpers? Noting in the photos of the bare plastic car that they both have pretty prominent mold lines on them. Sanding that out and applying Alclad or even buying Modelhaus chrome would improve the model immensely.
Ramfins59 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Looking good Al. I agree with Tom about the bumpers. I've got one of these Craftsman kits "in the pile" to be worked on eventually too.
Foxer Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 What a difference with just some paint on it! Yes, I love '59 Mercs ..
Porscheman Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 Just for Tom and Rich. I removed the mold lines and refinished them with Alclad. Looks much better, thanks guys. Al
72 Charger Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I Love it in the red / black . Nice save there Al . I would do two tone interior myself but its your model
Tom Geiger Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Just for Tom and Rich. I removed the mold lines and refinished them with Alclad. Looks much better, thanks guys. Al Much, much better than new! You needed something to do this afternoon anyway!
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 There must have been a bunch of these "Junior Craftsman" kits made. I see a lot more of these around than the annual kits, though there's little difference between them. I built mine from the same kit & modified an up-top for it. As for the interior, I would guess that a matching red & black interior would have been the most likely combo. Steve
Porscheman Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Steven, I can't find a clear picture of the wheel covers. Is the center black or red?
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Al. I went by this photo. The center is a black back ground with a gold anodized crest in the middle. The area around the fins is aluminum. Steve
Sixties Sam Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Great save! I like the colors. I would use a two-tone interior. Many cars had them back then.Sam
Sledsel Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Red and white or black and white inside would work also. One day I'll get my hands on a 59. I have a few 60's tho Edited October 30, 2015 by Sledsel
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Unfortunately, Mercury was extremely boring with their interiors at this time & most every convertible I've ever seen had a "monochromatic" interior. I did a 2-tone on mine when I built it. One solid color just doesn't cut it on these late 50s cars! Steve
vintagercr Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 That is coming along nicely. Nice work on the bumper.
GTJUNIOR Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Nice save. IMHO a two tone interior would be the way to go.
gtx6970 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I have a 1959 Mercury builtup ( not excactly an easy one to find reasonably priced ) , so I am definitly going to follow this one for ideas.I haven't decided on a color combo for mine yet. I am think pale yellow with a bronze colored interior
khier Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Nice work on the bumpers, but if I may make suggestions this gem deserves re-chromed parts.
Porscheman Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 I want to thanks everyone for the nice comments and reference photo's. I just have some minor details, like mirrors, antenna and a new windshield from the Modelhaus. I didn't realize it was broken until final assembly. Thanks again, Al
