Cosmo_Song Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 (edited) Hi guys I`m Cosmo and this is my first post in here. I`m working on a conversion project that started from a MPC `76 Chevy Caprice 2-door coupe version. For some reason the body part was not molded well when I received the model and I think it`s beyond repairable. So I decieded to chop the damaged A-pillar and fender section and replace it with epoxy-bounded Foil material and gave it a damaged appearance. I always have a thing for the big, full-size american 4 door sedan in the 60`s and 70`s. So I converted the MPC 2-door coupe version to a 4-door sedan. I cut the B-pillar and fill the quarter window because I prefer a more traditional and thicker C-pillar which is different from the actual `76 Caprice sedan, but personally I prefer the look. I also rescribed the door panel lines and trunk. I used sterene sheet to reform the roof section and I sanded off the side trim to give the Caprice a more "base model" appearance. -------------------------------------------------------- I`ll keep the progress updated in here. Comments are greatfully appreciated! Edited September 24, 2016 by harleyszone 1
Cpt Tuttle Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I love the 1971-76 4d ht B-bodies so I will follow with great interest.
louie Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I love it ,love it, love it. I am a big fan of every make and model and I LOVE what you are doing here. A big 70s four door ( somebody wake me up, I must be dreaming ). I look forward to watching the progress on this one. Thanks and please keep us updated on your build. Jeff
disabled modeler Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Nice... I too am a big fan of the 4doors and wagons of the very late 50s through mid 70s...
Dominik Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 oha! nice work you've done on the body! looking forward for more - love this big 4-doors.
DrKerry Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Great start, can't wait to see it come together!!!!Oh and welcome aboard!!!!!!
Foxer Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I like the damage .. will look good with some weathering on it
Ron Hamilton Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Interesting! I like where you are going with this.I need to see more!!!!! I still have a little work to do on my '74 "Spirit of America" Impala Hardtop. I have to do some refinements to the mouldings.
MyBradKeselowski Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Great scratchbuilding ! ! It's not easy converting a 2 door Caprice into a 4 door, I like where you going and can't wait to see more. I love these big 71-76 land yacht Chevy's..
charlie8575 Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Could I interest you in a repeat performance with an undamaged model and send it to be cast? I think quite a few would sell for the caster that ends up with it.Excellent work.Charlie Larkin

I was looking for MPC Caprice/Impala 1971-1975 but it seems there`s no way I could afford the price for them on ebay right now. I really hope RC2/AMT/MPC could re-issue these big 70`s tanks someday in the future. BTW I really like these big `73 in the 007 movie.

I would consider to do an "accurate" and stock version for the `76 hardtop 4door sedan with the open opera window and side mouldings. I`ve never done 2 piece molding tho I think I need to try molding something with silicone first. Edited November 9, 2015 by harleyszone
Cosmo_Song Posted November 8, 2015 Author Posted November 8, 2015 So here`s the progress as 11/7. I applied TAMIYA primer, sanded the intersection between foil fender and plastic body. I also washed the door panel lines and details on grille and bumper. I used brown oil paint to wash the whitewall tire and rim so they won`t look that "fresh". Any color suggestions? I`m trying to do a very "70`s" look so I might go with this copper color.
Crusader101 Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 (edited) Great work here, really looking good. Edited November 8, 2015 by Crusader101
Cosmo_Song Posted November 8, 2015 Author Posted November 8, 2015 Thanks everyone for the feedback! Anyone have some color suggestions? Personally I think this copper color can represent the 1970`s trend a lot.
Bob Ellis Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Chevy called those 4 door hardtops, Sport Sedan. 1976 is the last year ever (1956-1976).Nice work
louie Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Hi Cosmo, that's looking really good. I'm going to go with you on this, copper works real good on that make and year. My father had a 72 impala. I think it was a 72, anyhow it was a copper kinda color ( old and worn) with plenty of rust also a 4 door. He finally got a new car and gave it to my sister who used it to commute back and forth to college until 86 and then sold it to a friend of mine for a 100 bucks hahaha. The last time I saw it I was coming home from work and saw him racing a ( what looked to be )brand new 86 corvette side by side going about 100 mph on the opposite side of the road. Just a couple of memories of a big 4 door boat that I new well. Thank you. Jeff
Ron Hamilton Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Cosmo, I am really digging the big Chevy. I have one of every year in my collection, but I only have one what I could call done. It is a '71, that started as a glue-bomb that was a total mess, but like you, I cannot stomach the prices that an un-built kit would command, so I buy workable built-ups, with the exception of the '76 kits, which I bought several of. As you can see, I like copper too. The big thing I am not crazy about is the poorly executed Big Block Chevrolet Powertrain in these kits. I understand that it is old tooling that dates back to the '60's, as my '68 SS427 has the same engine. My Mom's Impala had the base 350 V8, with the 2 bbl carb and A/C. I may try to replicate that for my model when I get back to it.
charlie8575 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Dark brown metallic with a tan interior and vinyl top is very vintage-appropriate, too. Any Earth-tone color can look like. Old Car Brochures has a '76 full-size brochure, and you can get plenty of color ideas. Charlie Larkin
