The "majority of the general public" have no clue as to how one makes an informed decision, and most of them lack the general knowledge to be considered remotely "informed" anyway.

In a recent survey, 10% of the respondents thought that Judge Judy was a member of the Supreme Court.

I'm amazed that this country even manages to function day to day...

I think they call that "digression" and it seems to be a fairly common aspect of human conversation.

And how many times can you say "be safe" anyway? :D

Maybe we need on-topic-police for the Off-Topic Lounge. ;)

My sister put some pictures for us to see on our family Facebook.

She lives inside the DC belt loop. The drift between her building and the next one is over 6 ft tall.  Still very windy it was starting to drift on the balcony.

Friday we was forecast to get 6 to 9 inches with white conditions at 10 pm news for Friday we actually received 1 and 1/2 but we did get the 35 mph wind on Saturday.  I think the weather man talking that for 3 days received a commission from the grocery stores. The grocery stores are cleaned out. Most people here can't drive in snow.  Today Saturday its all melted...

Yea. You guys got some snow. Beautiful to look at. A pain in the butt to move. Even by Minnesota standards you got a lot of snow in one snowfall. We've been very lucky here this winter. A few very cold days recently. But, not too much snow. It's actually been a pretty winter this year. I've got very little to complain about.

You all saw the pic I posted yesterday...........here's an update on what's piled up since!

The view from my back porch.........

46:475356226374

45:475356225143

There's a car under there............somewhere! :o

43:475356223909

Making some progress.........

41:475356221283

37:475356217941

That looks like more than 30½ inches, but OK.......

At this point the car is completely free and facing the other way. Needless to say, I still have a lot more shoveling to do as I have yet to get to the front of the house, and also to make a wider path for me to park in the back. The borough I live in still has their Snow Emergency in effect till Wednesday at 3 PM.

I'm definitely taking the day off tomorrow! In my 5½ decades on this planet, I've NEVER seen this much snow in such a short period of time! It certainly beats the snow we had back in '83 which was 25", and the '96 storm we had pales in comparison even though that one was much more destructive when we had this happen.............

OK, all of you who had a like snowfall out there, PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Shoveling snow can be the toughest thing on your body, especially if you're one who's not a regular exerciser! It really can take a toll!

Ummmmm,

Almost ashamed to post that I saw a cloud this morning.................................

OMG! I assume Vegas put their "Cloud Emergency" disaster plan into effect? Streets shut down, National Guard on alert, etc.

I hope you and yours are ok...

I measured the roof of my car in Bowie, MD, right at the intersection of I-95 and US50 just outside of DC. There was only (!) 18" of snow. If you're curious, that amount of snow will compress the suspension of a 2007 V-6 Mustang by 1" in the front, and 1-1/2" in the rear measured at the highest point of the wheelwell to the ground. I ought to figure out if that exceeds the GVWR  .

I've seen a lot of footage on TV, stay safe over there folks ;)

We don't see much snow in Australia, I've only touched the stuff once.....

It's been touch and go here all day. I was forced to take MrsG to PF Chang's for dinner as Papa John's wouldn't deliver. Low light levels and all, liability you know.

Thank God you survived a "cloud event." Must have been nerve-wracking!

Growing up in the northern burbs of Chicago, it had to be really cold or snowy for them to close schools and while I remember some bad storms from the '70's, we all somehow made it to school.

My kids started school in northern Illinois before we moved to Charlotte 10 years ago. We lived in a small town in Illinois and not once did they have a snow day because our village was very efficient at snow removal. They get down here and they average at least 2-3 snow days per year because :

1. The lack of snow removal equipment in the area. For the first time ever they salted our streets last Friday during our sleet/snow event that yielded 2" of mix.

2. The schools are quick to close as the district runs county wide here in NC, unlike Illinois, and one end of the county can hit with 3 inches of snow and ice and the other end has nothing!

3. The legal ramifications of holding school and the possibility of an accident to too great for the leaders to risk. Again, a lack of equipment prevents common sense decisions.

My family has had the last three days off of school (Friday, Monday and Tuesday) and will now be using other holidays to make up the lost days. Last Friday was a legitimate snow day as we had ice on the roads and high winds causing visibility problems. Yesterday and today are a joke as the temps have warmed to near 60 degrees both days and the ice and snow are pretty much gone. There are a few school campuses that have some ice in their parking lots and walkways and supposedly they have crews working on clearing them today but who knows, it could be another snow day tomorrow!

Harry it was horrible!

Nevada D.O.T. has, at best, one plow assembly and one salt spreader assembly for use in the entire southern half of the state. These are specifically for use on Mount Charleston, above the 5,000 foot level. It will snow loads there at times.

They, NDOT, plan for the weather that exists 90% of the year, extreme heat. That's why 8" of heavy wet snow in 2008, a record BTW, paralyzed the valley.

Asphalt melts here by 7:00am during the summer.
