I originally built this one for Tamiya in the early 90’s.  It was on display in the Tamiya America headquarters until they closed that facility down.  Most of the built-up models were moved elsewhere but there was not room for all of them and the people at Tamiya were nice enough to contact the builders and ask if we wanted some of what we built back; this is one of them.

The Testors Classic White I used was already a bit too warm in color, and it had yellowed a bit more over the last 15(?) years.  The decals were not holding up the best either, since I did not store it too well and it was covered in grimy dust when I pulled it out last week.

The cemented on parts came off relatively easy with minimal damage and the body was hosed down with Easy Off and allowed to soak.  The decals came right off; the paint needed a second application for full removal.

A light coat of primer after scrubbing and some scribing.  (I’ll fill the hole for the antenna in the roof.)

Have you got a pic of the car before you started?

I too built this kit years ago. Not sure what happened to it though. I now have a replacement in my stash. Waiting.

Thanks guys.

No before photos of it.

I didn't take pictures of most of what I built for them, it was before digital cameras were around.

I built so many (often 5+ per week) that I just video taped them rather than deal with the cost of developing film.

Did not know they shut the Tamiay USA facilty down. Great source for getting missing/faulty parts for Tamiya kits. Guess we now have to go to Tamiya Japan now. Shame due to language at times.

They didn't shut it down in that respect.  They down sized and moved.  The American HQ is still in operation and will still provide assistance and parts.  It is in a much smaller office in Irvine and the warehouse is in Carson.  Apparently, it was a money thing.  Oh, they still own the land behind the old HQ and the RC track is also still there and operational.

great so far. how do you remove those paints??

I believe he used Easy-Off oven cleaner.  I haven't resorted to using that yet, but it looks like it did a good job.

Mark, glad to hear you are refurbishing it. Hopefully you will bring it by the club meeting in March. I would like to see it, but can't make tonight's meeting.

I've had great luck using either SuperClean or PurplePower.

Oven cleaner seems a last resort to me.

personally I've never used oven cleaner but SuperClean works great and Isopropyl alcohol works great too on TS spray paints. I wouldn't use IPA on resin parts tho, SuperClean wont hurt resin.

Nice work on the Audi so far. It was really nice of Tamiya to offer the builders back their works. Looking forward to more, your projects always look amazing when done.

Sorry to hear that Pete.  It should be done by then.  And thanks for adding the clarifying info about Tamiya.

No, oven cleaner will not remove TS (lacquer) paints.  I use alcohol to strip TS on plastic, lacquer thinner on resin.
