Very cool. If not for that man the building would probably have been torn down and a weed and trash strewn vacant lot would be there now.

As they say in the commercials, "But wait!" Ever wonder what all those 20' shipping containers are good for besides shipping stuff in?

Not a gas station, dumpster or shipping container, but I've lived in a few of my shops over the years. Once spent the summer living in a tent on the flat roof of one shop on a hill close to downtown Atlanta, with a fantastic view of the skyline. The girls seemed to think it was cool enough, kinda "romantic" (of course, I was young and decent looking then...:D). Now I'd just be "that crazy old man who lives on his roof". B)

And yes, shipping containers have been reworked into some pretty cool housing...

For those that Do want to live in an old Gas Station there's one for sale just north of Sunsites, Az that was converted in to a House already that I'd bet would go for not much at all.

Sometimes I think an old fire station would be cool too, got places to prep and eat food, relax, sleep, and you can work on your cars in the house like a model or an R/C car!

I would as long as its a larger sized one and not a dinky one....there is lots of possibilities for use and most are built pretty decently.  bad thing is mine would look like one to a point...LOL..and I do not think the wife would go for it.

HGTV used to have a regular series on homes that had served a much different purpose when first built. They had some very interesting homes built from mostly old commercial buildings. Being an old car guy I always harbored a desire of converting an old car dealership. You know, a large area to work on old cars with living quarters attached.

Yeah, a 20.000 square foot shop, and a 1500 square foot living area. My kinda life.  :D

Here are two in my neighborhood that were converted to residences. The first firehouse is the former Engine 38 (old Brooklyn Fire Dept., later E 238 FDNY).  It was converted in 1976, a year after the engine company moved to new digs a couple blocks away.

It still has the old "B.F.D." logo above the second floor windows.

The next two photos are of the former Engine 215 firehouse on my old block. E 215 was disbanded on Sept. 15, 1972. It was sold at city auction for $19,000 in 1975 and the building was converted in 1983.

This is a 1600 sq.ft. 2 BR 1 Bath loft apartment on the second floor. It rents for $6300/mo.

It would've been cool to have kept the fire pole. It beats walking down stairs if you're running late for school or work. More fun, too. :)
