DrKerry Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 for those that use Future to clear your cars. Does anyone know if there is a shelf life on Future? Does it last for years in the bottle or would it be best to throw away and buy a new bottle every couple of years?? I've had the bottle I do for 15 years now and it doesn't seem to cover or shine like it used to. Thanks for any help you can offer on this!!!!!
bbowser Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I can't even find it anywhere around here. I've seen that I need to be looking for Pledge "with Future Shine" or something to that effect but no where I've looked carries anything like that. I've searched groceries, dollar stores, Wally world, even Home Depot. Where do you find it?
keyser Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) I think 15yo is probably too old if it doesn't shine well. I've never heard of a shelf life, but normal customers don't keep a bottle 15yrs Mine is about 6-7yrs and it's fine. Has the 2008 label, not 2011 label Stuff has had about 12 names and repackagings since yours, so here's a gif from another thread here. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/8964-using-pledge-floor-care-tile-vinyl-floor-finish-with-future-shine/?page=6 Pledge Floor Care Edited May 21, 2016 by keyser linky
Jon Haigwood Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I have been using some that I bought sometime back in the early 90"s works OK for me

Harry P. Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Just an FYI... it's not a wax. There is no wax in it, it's just clear acrylic.

DrKerry Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 I got mine at A store in my old town. A small Mom and Pop type storer banks for the info everyone. I think it's time for new stuff......
Harry Joy Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I've been using the same bottle for about 16 years. And I use it on every model I build. A little goes a long way.
DrKerry Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Mine has to be around that, I know when I use it and it dries it has milky looking streaks in it on some cars, not all but some.....
Harry P. Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Milky means it's not fully dry. Future dries dead clear.
DrKerry Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Thanks Harry. Kool builds there too by the way....
Harry P. Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Thanks Harry. Kool builds there too by the way.... Thanks! And I have lots more!
Harry P. Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 One more point... you have to let each coat dry completely before adding another one. If you recoat before the last coat has completely dried, you will get that "milky" look. I use a food dehydrator to speed up the drying process, but you don't need to do that. Just let it air dry until there is no more "milky" look. And you can't smell it anymore. If you can still smell it, it's not fully dry.
mikemodeler Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Harry,Nice builds!Do you airbrush yours or hand brush it on? I did a model a couple of years ago with Future and hand brushed it on only to see it cracking a week later. Wasn't sure if it was due to the application process or some other factor.
Harry P. Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Thanks, Mike.I use a wide, flat, soft (squirrel hair?) brush, and just sort of flow it on... not a lot of brush strokes. And I do it in sections, for more control. Left front fender, right front fender, left rear, right rear, left body side, etc. I know it sounds tedious, but Future is very thin... pretty much the same viscosity as water, and tends to sag and collect in the low areas. By doing it in sections I can keep tabs on it, and use the corner of a paper towel to sop up any excess that may accumulate. I tried airbrushing it, but I like the control I have by brushing it on, sections at a time.Yes, it's a process, and it isn't going to be everyone's choice... but as the photos show, it works for me.
DrKerry Posted May 23, 2016 Author Posted May 23, 2016 I too use a wide flat soft bristle brush to apply. I more or less only have one one coat on all that I use it on. Never tri d multiple coats. May have to try it. I did use my 16 year old stuff today while sitting outside at our rummage sale today and applied it on my Eliminator Coupe and it turned out pretty good o my last few attempts/fails could of been due to weather or who knows...... I may try a second coat on the coupe to see if it helps gloss it up a bit more.... Thanks all!!!!!!!!!
935k3 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Greatt builds Harry. milkiness might also be a humidity problem Future can be wiped off with ammonia which is safe for all paints except water based acrylics. I would not use Windex because it does some alcohol in it. I apply Future with cosmetic rounds(see pic). I dip them damp off the excess and carefully wipe it on. I use a Q-Tip for small areas. I use Future to seal all my decals. It's safe and can applied only where needed vs spraying it on.
Harry P. Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Very nice work HarryAre those all 1/8th scale? They are all 1/16 scale.
martinfan5 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 They are all 1/16 scale.Oh heck, I meant 1/16th but typed 1/8th
