Guy went to prison for his beliefs. I didn't agree with them, but you gotta respect that kind of commitment, especially when so many in that era "faked it" and got away with it scot-free. RIP.

I heard that Cassius Clay also died!
Controversial figure for sure, also did a lot of good as well, RIP

Yeah, he pissed Dad off when he did that, Dad was drafted at the same time and actually went in when Ali was supposed to.  I kinda wonder if his change in religion was similar to Ted Nugent's various attempts to stay out of the military a few years later.

U.S.Navy 1969-1974. Sorry never did anything for me. Right up there with Hanoi Jane.

Oh, no, no, no. Very, very few are in the same scummy pit as Hanoi Jane, and Ali isn't one of them.

His career might have been shorter had the punch that dislocated Sonny Liston's shoulder connected instead of hitting air. I think he dodged a killer that time. '67 or so.

I don't comprehend what Pat said just above.

The boxer was a true talent, for sure.

I was drafted back then, actually doing fairly well in a Florida University, what a shock.  Welcome to life.

Better now what Harry said, "No politics guys".

His dodging predated Vietnam, so it's not like he was trying to avoid going there.  I think the worst Dad saw was a big city bully that was in with Dad (as would have been Ali) who couldn't handle it and ate his rifle in a training foxhole on base.

In a fight with Sonny Liston, when he was still Cassius Clay, Liston swung a massive punch which Clay dodged (danced like a butterfly). Liston dislocated his shouder with that punch. Many believed it would have been an instant knockout, maybe worse.

Actually it happened in 1967... well into the war in Vietnam.

Ali was definitely a very polarizing figure, but one thing is for sure, we won't see another one like him, he will be missed!

I'm enjoying laughing at all the people who have been posting anti-Islam BS over the past year or so, and are now posting Ali quotes. Not here, just on the internet in general.

muslims are supposed to be buried within  24 hours... ....oh i forgot he was only a muslim when it was convenient for him. rd

Maybe not another one exactly like him, but unfortunately, there's a great mob of people clamoring to be polarizing figures. Ali couldn't do it today. He'd be lost in the noise. Back in the day there were three national TV networks and Life Magazine. If they followed you then you owned America.

That's very True! I always got the idea that Ali was much more genuine than the celebrities today. Today's celebrities say and do things that their agents tell them that people want to hear, so that they become even more famous, and make even more money, and you have no idea what their real personalities are (see anyone with the name Kardashian). I never got that idea with Ali.
