vamach1 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Was basically a glue bomb with various pieces from the 66 Mustang and 68 Shelby I intend to build it as close to "stock" as I can.
espo Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 This is a great looking body style. I'm wondering about the openings in the sail panels ?
RestoModGuy Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Nice save and recreation. I have the AMT Ironhorse kit from the 70's that looks like it was cast to be similar model replication or tribute to this original Mach 1Do you know if this started as the AMT Ironhorse?
Snake45 Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Very nice! I wish I could find one of these to do.
geemoney Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 i have the originalI bought the iron horse new in like '75 (2.99 with tax!)wish I still had the 'horse, it escaped me!
vamach1 Posted March 15, 2017 Author Posted March 15, 2017 I think this kit preceded the Iron Horse but they are very similar.
Ron Hamilton Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 I am so jealous Rex. The Mach1 is a grail of mine.
vamach1 Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I am so jealous Rex. The Mach1 is a grail of mine. It's very over rated, i.e. i would not pay more than $50 for an unbuilt kit. I probably paid $20 for this rough built up ten years ago and will do my best. It's probably a good thing it was not a mint kit or else I would have been tempted to sell it for big bucks.
Daddyfink Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 I found one a few weeks ago, and in good shape, for only $20 as well. I am very surprised AMT has not re-issued it.
vamach1 Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I'm going to use the 67 Mustang chassis (newer release) as it fits a lot better once the tranny tunnel is removed. The chassis I had was from the AMT 66 Mustang and it did not fit very well. Great deal on that find Jesse - Ron is really going to hate you ;-)

Wow, did not know this kit existed, thanks to post a pict of the box. The Iron Horse version is similar but also very different in the hood, side fillers. The Iron Horse I have has dual fillers molded into the trunk and flat hood. I admit I think I like the styling of the actual Mach1 you have, now I need to get lucky and find one to go with my Iron Horse kit

vamach1 Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Here is a modified Iron Horse body that I "shelbyized" in the 80's and at some point later decided to try and undo my customizing. Anyway, someday I'll figure out what do to with it - perhaps go back to the Shelby idea.
Mark Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Can you post some pics of the the engine, interior and chassis of the Mach1? I'm not sure if the parts I have are correct. The interior looks correct. It should be molded in red like the body. The chassis and engine are identical to those in the common-as-dirt '66 Mustang coupe kit. That kit combines the Mach I/Iron Horse chassis/engine (which originated in the '65-'66 annual kits) with the '66 coupe promotional model body. (The original annual coupe/convertible kit used a convertible body with a separate, glue-on vinyl textured roof.)
vamach1 Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Thanks. For some reason the 66 chassis does not fit well at all so I've scrapped it and will use the 67 GT350 chassis which is ten times better anyway.
66belair Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 I'll be watching this one closely as I have a customer from work who is building a 1:1 version of this. Nice start.
vamach1 Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) Found the tail light part I bought at an NNL so it will be right at home bringing up the rear. Edited April 1, 2017 by vamach1 ee
oldcarfan Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 I think the Iron Horse version was the same kit, just changed a bit and recycled to get another use out of a tool. I seem to remember someone saying that a while back. It would be nice to see it returned to original and reissued if the tool is still around.
