Fast Floyd 2 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 (edited) Here's a original issue AMT 1965 Mustang 2+2 I've been working on, Off & On for a while. It was a incomplete kit when I got it a few years ago. I've slowly been collecting parts for it over the years. Now I think I have enough original parts to build it. I've added a set of styled steel wheels from a 1966 Fairlane GT, and the engine is from a later AMT 1966 Coupe kit. Still undecided on the color for the body. I have to replace the Passengers side quarter vent because a previous owner cut one side out. I will use a vent from a Street Freaks Altered Wheel base /Funny car issue Mustang fastback body. Let me know what you think. Edited May 17, 2017 by Fast Floyd 2
vamach1 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 It is funny back in those days they could GT away with box art showing what appears to be Shelby clone but inside you get a stock 289 with an auto trans. I sure most kids did not know the difference or care but it saved the companies money to use some of the same parts whether the kit was a coupe, fastback or convertible.

I was almost heart broken when I saw the Round 2 re-pop of the 65 fastback was coming out. then I saw it was the 1/32nd scale. I was still kind of wishing it was 1/25 th though..... Fast Floyd 2 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Sounds like you have a plan. Drive on!Yes, it has been the plan for a few years now, but it's slowly turning to a build!!
Snake45 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 If you need some inspiration, here's one I did a few years back using the top and interior of a VERY roached glue bomb '66 GT 2+2 and a reissued hardtop.
Michael in Illinois Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Hey, I have one that's in my project pile, needed new rear quarters and taillight panel, putting the chassis and engine surround from the 67 mustang under it.

Can't wait to see what you do with it, I thought about using a 67 Chassis,
espo Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 These were great cars in 1:1 and this kit was very nice for it's day and still a great one to build. Since others have pointed out the discrepancies between the box art and the kit, I have noticed something that my mean nothing to you, but. The body of the kit shows the callouts on the front fenders for a 289 engine. But not just any 289, the 271 HP 289 that I believe could only be had with a 4-speed. Ford experts here my prove me wrong, but the few owners of 271 HP Fords that I knew back when only had 4 speeds. They included a '63 Fairlane and two Mustangs. I only mention this for your information as to how you want to do your build and if this sort of thing even matters to you.

The 65/66 GT were available in Automatic, but the engine was a 225 hp 289 4v, not the 271 Hp 289., My build will be a 4 spd , but just a Mustang Sports roof, unless I can find a source for all the GT parts, (rear Valance, GT grill, and the trumpet exhaust tips). Which I made some Exhaust tips from Aluminum tubing for my 66 GT Convertible build.
Fast Floyd 2 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Cut-n-paste ;) I've really been considering this option Ron, We've had this discussion before. LOL!!! I've still not made up my mind on that, Yet. .
Snake45 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Cut-n-paste ;) That's almost how I did mine. I measured and cut very carefully, and almost no putty/filler was needed. What was used was mainly in matching the contours at the front edge of the roof.
PARTSMARTY Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 You are the maestro to fords like me with mopars-lol-looks great !!!
Snake45 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Here's where I made my cuts. The blue is the leftover top from the donor reissue coupe, the white trash underneath is the original '66 FB annual roof donor.
Fast Floyd 2 Posted May 19, 2017 Author Posted May 19, 2017 @Snake45 that's some really cool work!! Love it.
vamach1 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I bought this resin fastback many years ago and should have th parts to build a GT.
Snake45 Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I bought this resin fastback many years ago and should have th parts to build a GT. I knew this was true of '66s, but just ran a google-image check to see if it applied to '65s, too, and it does: The Mustang fastbacks, whether GT or "base" 2+2, did not have the fake vent trim at the rear of side coves. (That was a pain to sand out of the coupe donor body when I built mine.) Also: The GTs didn't have the chrome rocker trim, but the base cars did. I left them on my conversion just to be different (and as a non-GT), as the original '66 annual fastback was definitely a GT and didn't have them. Just thought you'd want to know. Nice resin body, BTW.
Fast Floyd 2 Posted May 29, 2017 Author Posted May 29, 2017 I forgot I had these stashed away somewhere. Wow !!!!! What a Great collection!! Droooooooooool !!! I could use a couple of those LOL!!
Fast Floyd 2 Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 I sure wish I knew of a Better SMF for this one. The 289 for these are not the best in the model world. Any suggestions??
