So I have to be in Los Angeles for two weeks on business in October and will have the weekend of October 12-13 to have fun on my own. I have already done the Petersen Museum a couple of times so looking for something new to do. I know there are some hobby shops in the greater LA area, any particular ones I should visit or avoid? I checked and didn't find any hobby shows that weekend and nothing going on at the Pomona Fairplex that I want to attend.

TIA for any tips or ideas on things to do besides the beach.

Burbank's House of Hobbies.
Smith Brothers Hobbies in Northridge.

Pegasus Hobbies in Montclair (a bit of a hike but worth the trip).

Check out the Nethercutt Museum on Sylmar.

I'd stay away from downtown LA that's a certainty.

I kinda agree......except for The Peterson. You pull into a secure covered parking garage, short inside walk to entrance......so you are never on street level L.A.     Sad really as every time I was in L.A. I'd walk downtown, to Olvera St to Bradberry building.....buit until they get their act together....No.

Pepasus is a drive....well worth it.

weekend huh?  OK, guaranteed you can find a worthwhile car show here with a cup of coffee and a donut - Donut Derelicts, corner of Adams and Magnolia in Huntington Beach, every Saturday morning, it takes over a small shopping center parking lot.  7ish AM or earlier and done by... well, whenever the shopping center opens - so definitely gone by 9:30 or 10:00 AM.  Plenty of Street Rods and other cool cars - so cool and big enough that it has it's own tee shirts and web site.  https://www.donutderelicts.com/

The Petersen isn't Downtown in any case, but having said that, Los Angeles is like any major city: good parts, bad parts and a lot of in between.

None of the hobby shops noted are either......I figured places in the region.

L.A. is near the top in the homeless population.....sadly I got a real good look last time I was there.....and from reports from my buddies.....even worse now a year later. It's a great place....with greater than average issues.

Yep, the high cost of housing and homelessness are big issues here, but I've been here 46 years and have seen it all - the ups & downs, etc. I don't want to make this political or take this too far off-topic, so my final comment on that subject is just to express my frustration that our elected officials seemingly ignored what a lot of us could see right in front of us for far too long.

Back on topic, I'll second Burbank's House of Hobbies (my regular shop) and the referencing of the other thread. Also, depending on your perspective, you may just enjoy seeing all the vintage cars and current exotic machinery that still inhabit the streets on Los Angeles on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks guys, I missed out on visiting Burbank HoH last year, but don't plan to miss it this year! I will also go to Pegasus, maybe they have some cool Moebius stuff to choose from.  I have done the Peterson as recently as last summer and I know they change things up, but after doing the vault tour and the museum itself, I will check out other things!

Pegasus has a lot of aftermarket parts as well.  There are also some resin bodies etc in the display cases for sale.

The Nethercutt Museum is just AMAZING, dozens of restored classics, just packed with stuff.

I strongly suggest you go, BUT, check it out.

Part of the collection is by tour only, look i advance!

The NHRA Museum is in Pomona at the Fairplex, if you like drag cars it's a must.

The Peterson is always fun, certainly wort seeing.

For local happening, you can check here for a thorough listing of events. You have to look in October though.

There really isn't anything to see downtown anyway, except office buildings.

Used to be MANY hobby shops, almost all are gone now.

Pegasus is world class, it's a little ways past Pomona, it takes a while to get there.

Burbank House of Hobbies isn't huge, but Glen is a GREAT GUY, they will order anything for you.

Check it out in advance.

Been going there for 30 some years, since they were on Olive Street!

Some OK restaurants in the Burbank Mall ( ten minutes away too!

Not car related, but Redondo Beach is great fun. Lots of inexpensive parking, variety of food too. Usually some cool cars at Ruby's on Sundays.

Peterson was always on my list when in LA......but after the huge remodel, inside and out, I am not as big a fan. Still great place......but  I miss the old first floor. BTW my LA buddy had his Terraplane pick up featured there

for 9 months.....so we visit a LOT (free now!)

Thanks Gary! I have already decided to hit the Pomona swap meet on Sunday, and the hobby shops on Saturday. I have to remember to watch my spending , I tend to get carried away!

I did see the car show at Ruby's last year when my wife and I stayed in Redondo Beach, will have to check it out again.

If you can manage it, get to Pomona and be in line well before they open the parking lot gates at 5 AM; you'll thank me later when you don't have to walk and walk and walk to your car when you leave. :) The toy/model sellers are mainly on the first few rows as you enter but there were usually a couple vendors selling kits farther along. Happy hunting!

If you time it right (as in check to see if they're open that day) the Mullin is a can't miss.  Ventura isn't THAT far away plus you can drive down Pacific Coast Hwy and see all the beaches mentioned in Beach Boys songs.  I've seen a bunch of the inventory (at the Peterson, of course) and they are just gorgeous.
