StevenGuthmiller Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 I think it looks pretty nice so far, but just my personal taste.......I hate those tear drop hood scoops! They always just looked big, bulky and like a huge after thought to me. I'm not much of a fan of the star wheels either, but these are just my opinions Steve
Oldschool4x4 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 What you are building looks awesome, in my opinion. I like the hood, but they do look better on Galaxies. Have you decided what engine is going in ? I'm building a 64 Fairlane with the all mighty 289...

That's why I added the scoop. I need it for clearance. I'm thinking about making it a nitrous engine.

I'm not trying to change your mind on anything. Just my observation. Sometimes there are things that don't click in my mind while working on a project and I value all opinions and thoughts. Steve
Oldschool4x4 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 "I'm thinking about making it a nitrous engine." Nothing wrong with that!!!
Plowboy Posted October 18, 2019 Author Posted October 18, 2019 Today I got the trunk opened, rain gutter and trunk seal installed, added detail to the underside of the trunklid, trunk floor filled, added trunk braces, opened the underside of the hood and the scoop vents. I still have to make the latches and hinges for the trunk. I'm getting closer to being able start the putty, sand and primer process.
Plowboy Posted October 18, 2019 Author Posted October 18, 2019 (edited) Thanx Robert and Ron! The Fairlane is ready for body and paint now! A few minor adjustments left. I gotta get the paint ordered. I've changed my mind on the color. I'm going to go with Tamiya's Light Gun Metal. I'm going to paint the bumpers either body color or aluminum. Not sure on the interior color yet. I got the trunk hinged and am really happy with how it works. It will stay up on it's own. Still have to make the latches. I have a photo etch hood pin set that I may use on the hood. Lot of little details to work out yet. But, now I can make some real progress. Edited October 20, 2019 by Plowboy
Bucky Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Very nice work on the trunk area. I'd like to see the attachment point for the trunk hinge. I might want to borrow your idea for a future project.
Geno Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Man, this is so cool. I love it.??There, 2 thumbs up lol.
Plowboy Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 Thanx guys ! Here's a photo of the hinge setup. Very simple. But, it works.
Shambles Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I've done some similar trunk hinges. Do you use plastic rod for the male part of the hinge, or metal? I've used small diameter brass but it doesn't always adhere to the plastic lid with styrene glue.
STYRENE-SURFER Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Really like this one Roger Exceptional work! ?

I used crazy glue to glue the hinge to the lid.
Plowboy Posted October 25, 2019 Author Posted October 25, 2019 I now have all of the prep work done except for the body. Removing mold lines is so monotonous! I've changed the color yet again. I'm going with Tamiya Gun Metal. It's a lot darker than the Light Gun Metal. It should really pop against the red on the side trim and the interior along with the aluminum or silver bumpers. With the prep work done, I got in on the chassis. I made sub frame connectors with an X brace and center plate. The connectors are made from 2.5 x 4 styrene strip and the X brace is .100 rod. Something I've been mulling over is whether or not to glue the interior pan to the chassis. It would allow me to make the driveshaft tunnel smooth. But, it could also make things a pain later with the interior.
espo Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Great looking frame connectors and X brace. Depending on how dark of a floor color you're going with the seem between the floor and the drive shaft tunnel might not be that noticeable. AS you pointed out, having the interior part movable would make it a lot easier to assemble.

I'm planning on doing just one light coat over the primer. I'm thinking with the X brace and mufflers (if I use any) installed, it won't be very noticeable. I'm not going to sweat it either way.
Gizzy Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 What's not to like...a teardrop scoop,wheels,tires & stance are perfect.Nice work ?
Plowboy Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 Everything is now ready for primer and paint! The body is all sanded smooth, panel lines worked and added, core support and trunk latches are installed. I removed the wipers and door handles. The handles will come from the T-Bolt. If I decide to use the wipers, I have those also. I may just add stubs in their place. I changed the tires in favor of a set of Good Year Eagle slicks for the rear and MT for the front. I had to cut the intake tubes loose from the radiator support and install them to the grille. They don't line up exactly with the holes in the radiator support. But, I don't think it will be noticeable once everything is installed. I haven't decided if I'll use the photo etch hood pins yet. I may just add a pin to the hood to slip down into the latch. I didn't like the plain hubs behind the front wheels. So I reworked them by separating the outer rim from the center hub. I glued the hub to the wheel. It snaps right back on to the stub and still rolls. The rim slides right back into the tire and a set of disc brakes from a Revell '32 Ford finishes it off. Much better! Any questions, just ask.
Modlbldr Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 Beautiful work you are doing on this one. All of the extra trunk and engine bay work is amazingly clean. I love the shape of the body. Are you leaving the 260 v8 emblem on the front fender? Later-
