youpey Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 My friend got a new car Friday and was hit Sunday in the back while he was stopped at a stop sign. what's worse, the SUV that hit him, backed up and sped away. Now he has a banged up brand new car and has to pay his deductible to get it fixed. People make me so mad
High octane Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 There are many people on our roads today that are not responsible drivers, even though it's the law. Many drivers without licenses or insurance which is not fair to law abiding drivers at all. And yet our states do nothing about it at all. Back in the 60's drivers seemed much more courteous and responsible for their actions behind the wheel. Times have changed, and not always for the better.
Jim N Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 More than likely, this person was uninsured, so your friend would have been responsible for the deductible anyway. It isn't fair, but the states will not commit the resources to really address this.
Tom Geiger Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Man that does suck! Reminds me of something I saw many years ago. I was getting gas at a station across the street from a Chevy dealer. A couple was pulling out in a brand new blue Corvette and stopped to wait for passing traffic. I looked away for a moment and head a loud POW! I looked quickly and saw a box truck and a Corvette rubber nose in the air! Yea, the Corvette was probably sticking out a bit, and the truck was a bit too far to the right! And they met. Nobody was hurt, and I hung out to watch. Yes, it was brand new. Never got out of the parking lot!

espo Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Everyone should take a minute and read their insurance policies. Be sure you have "Uninsured Motorist" coverage. This will cover you if the other driver doesn't have insurance or is underinsured. In the fall of 1965 I took delivery of a new 1966 Impala SS. I lived in the mountains above San Bernardino California. The day I toke delivery at the dealership, that was at Sea Level, it was in the low 70 degrees. Living at over 3000 feet altitude the temperature was very different the next morning when I left for work. The temps were in the upper 20's and about 4 to 5 inches of fresh snow on the ground. I was pulling away from a stop sign when one of the workers at the gas station came roaring out onto the road. He had managed to clear a postage stamp size clearing on his windshield in order to see and since the truck had been parked outside all night he fell it was best to race the engine before he could keep it running and didn't want to wait a few minutes for the heater to defrost the windows. He never saw me until he hit the driver's side front bumper on the very end. The good news was that since the road was covered with snow and ice. The impact spun my new car around about 90 degrees and I feared the worst but the only real damage to my car was a scratched up front bumper that was now just slightly out of alignment. I made the clown pay the dealer to replace the bumper and the mounting brackets. He had no insurance and I didn't want my insurance rates to go up because I had a claim that wasn't my fault.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Big suck, but it happens more and more frequently. Guy I work with bought a perfect 2014 Caddy CTS wagon (not the V, just the 6...but it was like a new car) from one of our clients who decided he had too many cars. Absolutely pristine, and the first owner sold it to my friend for well under market. He had it 2 weeks and some uninsured illegal slammed into the back of it, shortening the poor thing by about 2 feet. Total loss.
Mark Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 The last time I had a job in the city, my older brother (who once drove much of what would have been the most direct route for me) advised me against taking that route any more than absolutely necessary. "Count every three cars that you pass along the way, and figure that at least every third one isn't insured..."
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 This happened to my wife just last month! The past few vehicles that my wife has had have been leased and it was time to trade for another. She picked up her brand new Acura MDX on a Thursday evening, drove it to work the next morning and after having the car for less than 12 hours, a student where she teaches hit it in the parking lot! $1,700.00 in damage. Bucky Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 In '74, my cousin bought a perfect '67 4-4-2 at a small used car lot in Memphis. He pulled up to the road upon leaving, looked both ways, and started to pull out. Right at that moment, an idiot ran the red light. My cousin turned the wheel sharp to the right, and creased the passenger side of his freshly purchased Olds on the bumper of a parked car!
Mike C Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 I once had a hit and run on a new car too. It was back in '84. I had a new Chrysler Lazer and somebody dented my right front fender while it was parked at a Burger King when I was out for lunch from work.
dmthamade Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 We do mechanical work/SRS work for body shops in the area. Seen lots of cars that didn't make it through their first tank of gas or first oil change before getting badly bent. Some of them weren't being driven, just parked and unfortunate casualty. Repair bills total into 20-30 G's but when the car is worth 100-130G's, it gets fixed. Don
Mike 1017 Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 Were there any security cameras close by ? Might get a license plate picture.
