Hopefully I can pull all of this together. I've been haggling over the tires for the last couple of weeks and after LOTS of research, going through photo shots and doing ALOT of measuring and head scratching I've come up with a new set of slicks that I'm going to use for this thing. Additionally I was concerned with how the front ride height was going to be but once I test fitted everything into place...…….it pretty much fell into place. I might go just a tad lower in the front but I'm pretty happy that I don't have to do much here as this has been quite the gaggle in the way of mods on this car. This is the way this car is going to look now and it seems like it's a lot closer to the reference photos that I have of this car. The wheels have been a source of much contemplation and decision making as well but I finally found a set that I will be happy with. Just gotta strip the chrome off of the front wheels and apply either Alclad or Molotow. I'll play around with both and see which one looks better. For now, however, this is progress for me so I can move forward with this thing. Reference shot: Updated parts and stance-I'll be bringing the rear tires in a tad/ wee bit as well. This is all a FAR cry from the way I had it:
mustang1989 Posted February 11, 2020 Author Posted February 11, 2020 Been working on this thing all week long. Starting to get googly eyed.... Oil filter, starter, bellhousing and transmission have all been painted up and installed. Working on the intake area of the build now which is where all the details are going to be. Stuff like ignition wiring, throttle linkage, fuel lines and all the mumbo jumbo stuff that goes in there.... All test fitted together with a set of carbs that I have in the stash. Proper carbs will go on top when I get 'em in the mail.... and for test fitting the engine into the frame to check out header options, header to frame clearances and general fit..... so I don't damage or mess up any of the details that I'm building here I've got another 427 that came in a glue bomb Maverick that I got in the mail that's undergoing a restoration/ transformation.
Roadrunner Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 I like the oil filter decal. Where does that come from?
AmericanMuscleFan Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 I do love those Maverick! They were widely present on the race tracks during the best era of the Pro Stock war between the american car makers. Your improvements on the frame and interior is very well done and this big 427 will look killer in that small engine bay! Nice fat tires in the back too!!! Keep up the good work!

Glad I could help. Ok gang....I managed to get the wheels coated in Molotow and the tires all decaled and completed. I didn't use the front wheels with the Molotow on them in the following pictures because this stuff has a minimum cure out of 48 hours. The rears I could handle somewhat because of the dish in the wheels but here's where we're at right now with the wheels/ tires. and then I found my headers that are going to give me the perfect clearance. I just cut the flanges off of them and modified the header extensions on the Jo-Han headers to match up with the headers and we're all set. Another major hurdle of this build overcome. iBorg Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Slicks may be too big. Whatever you do, if you're doing period correct is get rid of the Eagle marking. Goodyears of this era were Blue Streaks.

But the more I looked at the photo shots of the restored car the more they began to look the part. I'll be going with the restored car look so the Eagles are what I'll be going with( just really like the brutal look of it like that) BUT....I do have another Maverick that I'll be going period correct with so the tire diameter as well as the wheels will be more along those lines. Mike I do want to thank you for dropping in. I appreciate your comments. Edited February 13, 2020 by mustang1989
afx Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 The rears were pretty fat even back in the day. Good Year lettering

Roadrunner Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 This is looking wonderful. It seems that I had a Pinto race car model (possibly a pro stock?) at one time, but have no idea whatever became of it.
mustang1989 Posted February 15, 2020 Author Posted February 15, 2020 (edited) This one Kevin? Edited February 15, 2020 by mustang1989
mustang1989 Posted February 15, 2020 Author Posted February 15, 2020 Another thing that this kit is totally lacking in is the proper engine bay. I turned to the 67 Mustang kit for this since it's a fairly close match. On the right is an OOB engine bay in my other Maverick. After some mods and some trimming I've got the initial fit obtained. It's workable and looks like it should do the trick after some more fancy footwork.

Nazz Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 looking good! Nice work on the engine bay. Gotta love those Mavericks!

Perhaps Round 2 will eventually re-release it; I can only hope.

Thanks, You sound like me about 10 years ago. I was just counting my diecast list today--I now have over 100 of the things, plus another 20 or so built from kits. Today I finished up a diecast '63 Corvette and tonight I'm putting the finishing touches on a Ferrari GTO. Many of my diecasts are things that have never been made in plastic, or have been extinct for years, or in a few cases are actually BETTER than what's available in plastic. Come to the Dark Side, Young Roadrunner.

Finding the MPC kit may be impossible, not without paying a fortune for it anyway. 1 hour ago, slusher said: I have one of those, the only thing it is really larger then 1/24 scale.... That doesn't bother me at all, as (aside from the color), it's more or less identical to what I had, though mine was not a hatchback. Sorry for the thread drift, Joe. Interesting conversation going on while I'm working on my next update. Hopefully I can start slingin' some paint soon.
