Sam I Am Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Has anyone modified a Peterbilt wrecker body into a car hauler. I have this and went hmmm....
Bills72sj Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 It might be long enough for a 63-76 'Vette, If the front wall to where ramp starts down hill is 5-5/8" or longer it will work.
Sam I Am Posted December 24, 2019 Author Posted December 24, 2019 I was thinking if I extended the dovetail further it would lengthen the bed which should allow most any car to fit.
DPNM Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 You could extend the dovetail a little bit. Just looking at it, I wouldn't go too far because it may not look right because of where the body ends just behind the 2nd set of drive wheels. Unless you plan to fill in that area. You may also have to see if the car you want to haul will fit. You may have a problem if the rear tires of the car, assuming it is pulled on nose first, may be too far down the ramp where the car's frame will contact the top of the ramp.
gotnitro? Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 I'd go a different route..and extend the front. Most of these older car haulers used removable ramps to start the car onto the bed like a U Haul truck, that was stowed. Placing a build on the bed will show how much more length you'd need. Of course , that causes the truck frame to likely be short, but that's easily fixed. I dislike messing with angles and wheel spacing . Just an idea...I have the entire ramp bed from the papa truck if your be interested
Sam I Am Posted December 25, 2019 Author Posted December 25, 2019 Here is a 'cuda dirt track car and it seems to fit ok. I could always fab up a couple raised ramp sections like on the race car hauler bed, add a short section to the dovetail.... That might just work for a budget backyard racer. Add a tire rack over the front and call it good.

gotnitro? Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Wow nice addition ! The extension fits really well and adds just enough bed length. I bought a ramp bed on flea bay and it looks decent but the load has to be chosen carefully
