Rusty92 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I's thumbin' through the want ads in the Shelby County Tribune when this classified advertisement caught my eye. It said, "Take imme-di-ate delivery on this '57 Chevrolet half-ton pickup truck. Will sell or swap for a hide-a-bed and thirty-five bucks. Call One-four-oh, ring two, and ask for Bob." Started on a new project while I wait for paint for my GMC. I was inspired by C.W. McCall and his song “Classified.” So I figured I would build what the old truck might have looked like. I even have a Brillo box full of rusty parts. Wheels are from the AMT 57 bel air. I always envisioned the truck in the song being a burnt out orange color that had faded over time.
Rusty92 Posted March 21, 2020 Author Posted March 21, 2020 The bed in this kit is really cumbersome to put together! But I got one side done. Will need a little clean up.
Rusty92 Posted March 22, 2020 Author Posted March 22, 2020 Hopes for the missing badge on the passenger side. Also got the panel lines re-scribed.
89AKurt Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Have that and the '55 kit, so curious what the issue with the bed is. I also shoulda coulda woulda bought a '55 Cameo in the 90s, for only $5,000, dumbest decision I made. ?

It should just be a tub and then you hang the tenders and tailgate like other kits. There are 8 pieces. And the fit is not great. Instructions are vague as well!

I don't recall having seen it before.

This kit, and its 1955 cousins were very much wanted for years before AMT tooled up for them. Apart from poor window fit and some door frame shape issues on the '55, great kits. espo Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 The AMT '55 Cameo kit didn't have the side trim on the bed like the '57 model did. The bed is a little fiddly but it does turn out nice. Just plan on a couple of gluing sessions and don't try to put it all together at ones.

I think the bed could have been engineered a bit better, but it wouldn’t be fun if it just fell together. Anyway, here’s the ol girl in primer. Fixed some body issues, going to hit it with AK rust primer and let it sit. Not the bed sides though, obviously! Edited March 22, 2020 by Rusty92
espo Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 When I built one of the '57 Cameos a couple of years ago the problem areas that I ran into was mainly the fitment of the windows. My kits windows seemed slightly undersized. I created new window ledges around the inside of the cab to hold the "glass" in place and give me something to glue them to. I also added very small strips of Plastruct on the outer side of the body that served as chrome moldings and this added to giving the glass something to rest against. Other than that it was a fun build and I'm going to do another soon. One thing I did to make it harder on myself was to set it all on a Chevy 454SS pickup chassis and a '57 Bel Air dash and seat.

That sounds very cool! Does sound like a challenge. Thanks for the heads up on the glass. Here she sits now!
Rusty92 Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 Anyone know where I could find some tires like this? Also some wheels to fit?
Rusty92 Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 Robbed some from the MPC Jeep Commando kit. Not sure why the photo uploads sideways. These tires really have some grip!
Rusty92 Posted March 27, 2020 Author Posted March 27, 2020 Snow tire mock up. Looks very much how I imagined it.
stavanzer Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 NIce! C.W. McCall was a favorite of mine back in the day.
Rusty92 Posted March 29, 2020 Author Posted March 29, 2020 Started some weathering. Will have to hit some spots again, since my brush was too harsh and gouged the paint underneath.
Tom Geiger Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 Be aware that Chevy trucks in this era had six lug wheels. I put five lug wheels on my first 55 and got yelled at!

Not sure what was up with my phone, I always take the photos sideways. Will pay attention next time! ?

I wish someone told me before I finished two trucks! You can find six lug wheels in the AMT 37 Chevy, 50 Chevy pickup, 57 Black Widow and no doubt a few more kits. Aftermarket also makes them.

Someone only pointed it out way after it was completed. i was fortunate that this one has Baby Moons! And this one doesn’t really matter!
