slusher Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I was wondering why I have never seen an AMT 32 Proshop roadster built? I look at the built models every day. Is something wrong with the kit?
Snake45 Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I THINK I have that kit. There's nothing special about it, just another reissue of a 1962 tool, but missing several original parts (such as the tonneau cover, which I'd actually like to use).
stavanzer Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Yes, but AMT did restore some parts to the Pro-Shop version. Blower Scoop, and some other small bits. Not much really.
Draggon Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I've got one in progress, or more accurately, not much progress. I got it because the side of the box shows a highboy version and also bobbed rear fenders. Of course we all know this was another one of AMT's bits of false advertising.
Plowboy Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I think the main reason you don't see them built is because of the Revell '32 roadster.
Force Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 It's most likely so...the Revell kit is much better even tho' it's only a hot rod and no stock parts in it. The box for the AMT Pro Shop version is not that wrong, you can build either of the three versions with what's in the kit...but you have to do the modifications of the parts yourself, the highboy you leave out the fenders completely and the bobbed rear fenders are modified from the full fenders.
OldNYJim Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 What are the engine and parts options in this kit? I often see them listed on eBay for a fair price, but I’ve never actually seen what’s in the box...
Mark Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 Stock engine is the base four cylinder, optional engine is an early Chrysler Hemi. Everything is simplified (rear axle molded as part of the chassis, oil pan is part of engine block halves, interior has side panels and seat as a single part) but the kit does have nostalgia value. Some aspects are off a bit (slightly "sectioned" body sides, stock wheels are undersize) but assembled, it does look like a '32 Ford roadster.
Claude Thibodeau Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 Hi! I recently used one as the basis for a heavily modified salt racer car... It was fine, but I found the molding a smidge thick. The trunk lid wokrs fine. The belt-line reveal molding is more square than hald-round, actually. I suspect they had a mold parting line located there? The chassis/powertrain reflects the 60's origins, of course. However, if you want to replicate a Boydster type of Deuce (low and long), the sectionned body is a good start. For what it's worth, my two cents... CT
Snake45 Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 It's possible that there are several of them in this thread, just not called out as the Pro Shop boxing:

Mark Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 I don't know if the guy ever finished it, but I remember seeing a piece in a magazine some time ago about a 1:1 fiberglass '32 roadster that was scaled up from an AMT kit body, sectioning and all...

Hi! Actually, Boyd Coddington built a car in the 80's for a gentleman by the name od Gillette, if I remember properly. The body was Dana red, made of aluminium by Marcel Delay at Custom Metal in Corona, Ca. It was visibly sectionned (or actually made like that from the get go), and the upper quarter/tulip panel much more "rounded" than usual. It made the cover of Street Rodder back then! I'll try to retrieve it in my mag archives, and post it here... CT
Mark Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 The fiberglass one was a low-dollar project, the guy couldn't afford a steel one or a manufactured 'glass body so he made his own. He'd built several of the AMT kits (like a lot of kids did back then; they often bought more than one) so he used that one as the pattern. One thing on the Pro Shop kit: as I recall the box art car used stock wheels and tires from the '34 Ford sedan or 5W coupe kits.

Claude Thibodeau Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 Hi Bill! Nice proportions and stance! I see you used the rollingstock from the Phantom Vicky... It IS one of the best combo for low slung fenderless 30's cars, in my view. Just like on this stretched 29 Revell roadster, that I based loosely on the Magoo red 29. That very car (the 1/!) used a cut-dowm VW rear window as a windshield, as per Mr. Magoo admission. Hours of fun with styrene! CT
