afx Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) Super Groups have a very hit or miss quality but I thought we might explore them. To kick things off I submit: The Firm a British rock supergroup formed in 1984, featuring singer Paul Rodgers (Free and Bad Company), guitarist Jimmy Page (The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin), drummer Chris Slade (Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Uriah Heep and later AC/DC) and bass player Tony Franklin. iamsuperdan Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I enjoy these guys, although "supergroup" might be a stretch. George Lynch - Dokken, Lynch Mob Dug Pinnick - King's X Ray Luzier - Korn Three albums in, and they're a great solid hard rock band
iamsuperdan Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Here's another. The Winery Dogs Billy Sheehan - David Lee Roth, Talas, Mr Big Mike Portnoy - Dream Theatre Ritchie Kotzen - Poison, solo
JollySipper Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) Here's a super group from the more recent.... Them Crooked Vultures Josh Homme from Kyuss, QOTSA, EODM.... Dave Grohl from Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTSA.... John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.... Edited September 22, 2020 by JollySipper
Earl Marischal Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I saw The Firm in a half-empty Wembley Arena in 1985. Sadly they didn't live up to the hype. steve
JollySipper Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) Another one I like, Oysterhead.... It's Les Claypool of Primus, Trey Anastasio from Phish, and Stewart Copeland from some '80s group.... Edited September 22, 2020 by JollySipper
afx Posted September 22, 2020 Author Posted September 22, 2020 Temple of the Dog was an American rock supergroup that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. It was conceived by vocalist Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as a tribute to his friend, the late Andrew Wood, lead singer of the bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The lineup included Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass guitar (both ex-members of Mother Love Bone and later Pearl Jam), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) on lead guitar, and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden and later Pearl Jam) on drums. Eddie Vedder appeared as a guest to provide some lead and backing vocals.

Snake45 Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) First thing I think of when I think of "supergroup" is Beck Bogart Appice. Which was awful. But I got two other candidates. Here's an impromptu supergoup: Randy Newman, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, Waddy Wachtel, Paul Shaffer and The World's Most Dangerous Band: And if you like bluegrass/country, hard to get more super than this group: Edited September 22, 2020 by Snake45
iamsuperdan Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Here's another, probably not going to be popular around here. Metal Allegiance. Permanent members are Alex Skolnick from Testament, Dave Ellefson from MEgadeth, and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theatre. Guest members apeparing live and in studio includ members of Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, Periphery, Sepultura, Lacuna Coil, Slayer, and so many more.

iamsuperdan Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Just so everyone is clear, I believe that the OP would agree that this is the definition of supergroup, as it pertains to this thread. Not arguing that there aren't a lot of "super" groups out there. But perhaps they're not in the spirit of this thread.

It blows my mind that Dug Pinnick is 70 years old.
