Richard Bartrop Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 And we have had Humbrol paints for the longest time when the Americans couldn't get them, though lately, those have been harder to get.
BeakDoc Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 Just got an email from Hobbylinc.com announcing the arrival of Revell paints.

I don't have pics, but while searching for US-based businesses selling the enamels I came across a number of European military builder sites, and they consider Revell enamels to be high quality paints. The Stevens Int'l video shows the acrylic being brushed on, and they seem to excellent coverage without having to resort to multiple coats. From what I've seen, the spray paints are limited in # of colors, and IIRC they're priced slightly higher than Tamiya sprays.
doorsovdoon Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 Revell paints aren't all that, mind. They've been available in the UK since forever, you're not really missing out on anything. I prefer Humbrol paints, though they too aren't as good as they used to be, at least some of the lighter colours anyway. I find Revell paints are very streaky and watery.
GeeBee Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 I use both Humbrol and Revell enamel paints, i haven't used their water based acrylics, so I can't comment on those, although Revell haven't the range that Humbrol have, but they do have some different colours, they airbrush really nice, either thinned with lacquer thinners or their Color mix, although their metallic colours don't work well with lacquer thinners, Humbrol are true enamels where Revell's are a synthetic enamel, I haven't found a better gloss black than Revell's thinned with lacquer thinners.
Spottedlaurel Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 I prefer Revell to Humbrol enamels for brush painting nowadays. Humbrol seems to have changed over the years and I can't use it for some of the things I used to. Revell #9 is great for plastic/rubber trim that isn't quite black, I get through several tins of that a year.
stitchdup Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 I bought a joblot of the humbrol acrylics a while back, and they are poor quality. They seem to have some grit in them and dont cover very well by brush or spray. I ended up going back to the enamels as at least they are usable. I like the revell acrylics though, they cover well but I've only used the ones you get in the gift sets. Not tried the revell enamels yet
GeeBee Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 (edited) One line of paints Revell did back in the 1990's were their Car Metallics, luckily I still have a few tinlets left, I'm still wondering why they stopped making them,or were they only available in Germany?? I picked them up when I was working over there. Edited February 20, 2021 by GeeBee
doorsovdoon Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 I can't comment on how good Revell paints would be in an airbrush but I'd imagine they would be ideal for that by how thin they are. I will say though, some of the Humbrol paints are a bit gritty especially the No11 metallic silver.
