I spent some time sanding the hood and grill opening to partially correct the kit shortcomings by making both more rounded. I think it is definitely an improvement and closer to how it should be.

Phil....great project and one that is near and dear to my heart (I built a chopped full custom '49 Merc for the MPC Contest series in the mid 1970's and no one knew what to think about it; it eventually won 2nd nationwide in the finals that year).  It is very interesting to me that you based yours on the Revell kit, as even though I thought it was a well done effort overall, seems many trashed it for various reasons.  Excellent progress so far and keep up the good work!   TIM

I like it as well and never understood the hating on the Revell merc.

OP nice work!!

Thanks guys - Initially I was not going to do a work in progress post on this project because I figured the build would be very straight forward.  It has ended up being more involved than I thought it would be especially trying to rectify some of the short comings of the Revell kit that have been pointed out to me. But as a result I think I will end up with a much better looking tribute to the Sam Barris Merc.

Really cool! I’ll be following along!

Thanks guys - I appreciate your interest. I have pretty much completed modifications. Now it is a matter of finessing them. I did skim door hardware and armrests off the interior of a Revell '57 kit. Next  I plan to Bare-Metal-Foil the windshield and rear window frames and add dividers/splitters. After that I will move on to painting and assembly of the rolling chassis and interior.

I am very impressed with the Revell chassis and it only but needed minor modification for this project.  I used the Brizio restoration photos as a guide to build the rolling chassis. The frame was C’d, the hanger for the left side exhaust removed and the holes were filled for the lakes pipes. The AMT ’49 Merc flathead was built absolutely stock and connected to the AMT exhaust system as far as the muffler where it connects to the Revell tailpipe. I have included a couple of the Brizio photos for comparison.

I finally completed the interior and engine compartment so the entire inner body structure could be fully assembled. The split in front seat was cut open. Arm rests, cranks and levers were added to the door panels and a clutch pedal added to the floor board. Green trim done with .2mm archival ink pen which will look OK looking through the windows and to the naked eye. The carpet area is dark green as will be the headliner

The engine compartment was built pretty much box stock except for filling the holes in the firewall for mounting a bee-hive filter. The radiator was modified for the dual flathead cooling hoses.

I have to say I was very impressed with this kit in terms of the interior, engine compartment and chassis.

Now on to finishing the body.

I’ve managed to obtain both kits, the revell and the amt, as well as a third built up revell, I have your build to follow as inspiration, love the work on this so far! Well done sir well done
