Captain Spaulding Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Time for my next project, was planning on a 69 Dodge Charger General Lee but not having much luck finding one in my price range. Decided on this 69 Camaro Convertible instead, still in the early planning stage but leaning towards red with a black interior.

Captain Spaulding Posted January 20, 2021 Author Posted January 20, 2021 Not much to show so far, got the engine painted and somewhat together and painted and detailed the frame. So far everything is going together with no issues.
Cowpunk Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 I have a bunch of these kits. Once upon a time i decided to try to build one. I blew on some gray primer then looked at the body in the sunlight and saw all the shrunken areas in the body where the mold had been welded up and reworked. After that, they all became parts kits. ?

Definitely not a top notch kit, do the best you can with what skills you got though.
doorsovdoon Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Cool, I'll be watching. I almost bought this kit the other week but decided on the GMC Astro semi instead. Look forward to seeing more.

I already have WIP thread in the Model Trucks, Big Rig section on a Kenworth Aerodyne if you want to check that out:)

A rare as hens teeth in the UK. The MPC was the only one listed on ebay at the time and was pretty cheap. I wish I bought it now cos there isn't any available at all, then again, the GMC Astro I bought was the only one listed in the UK, so I probably would have said the same thing if I bought the Camaro convertible, Lol!
misterNNL Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 I built a '69 convertible Camaro from the AMT Indy pace car kit when the the kit was new and available anywhere. We were on vacation in '69 in a rented cabin for a week. It started raining the first day and was going to continue all week. I found a local hardware store that had the kit, bought the basic supplies I needed including gloss black for the body and flat black for the interior plus some bottle paint for details. I spent the next week building my Camaro while it poured down rain outside. Man what a great vacation that was! I still have that built model in my big display case 51 years later.

That is a cool story, I think many of us would wish we still had a car we built that many years ago.
Captain Spaulding Posted January 25, 2021 Author Posted January 25, 2021 Not much to show on the Camaro, been doing some things around the house with not being able to go many places. Got the motor finished, nothing too fancy. Have to raid my parts box as both sets of kit supplied rim's have chunks out of them still in the tree. Got lots so should find something in there to use.

Captain Spaulding Posted January 28, 2021 Author Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) Got the interior painted and assembled, came out alright nothing overly exciting. Just have to paint the body now, probably won't get around to doing that till next week. Edited January 28, 2021 by Captain Spaulding

Think of this way, the Astro will keep you busy for near a week whereas the Camaro would only been a day or so, the speed you work! ?

Painted Black Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Interior looks good, some well placed floor mats would hide those injector pin circles.

Captain Spaulding Posted February 3, 2021 Author Posted February 3, 2021 Got the body painted today, bright red almost looks orange. Will see how it looks when it dries.

That is, until he was sitting by the window at a coffee shop in Atlanta one day about a month before the show's greenlight and seen a 69 Dodge Charger ride by... he said "that's it"! And as they say, the rest is history! Also, another interesting fact is Aaron Spelling owned a pea green 69 Camaro convertible. He loved the car and wanted that to be the main car for Starsky & Hutch but he was too late. WB had already signed with Ford as a sponsor. So the Striped Tomato was born from a Torino instead. I only mention this because you are painting a 69 Camaro Red that looks orange lol It's like you are chanelling both shows with your Non General Lee Build!

I had heard that they were considering a Camaro or Mustang for the General Lee. Glad they went with the Charger looks much better to me. Didn't know they planned on a Camaro for Starsky and Hutch, the cars definitely helped make both shows. Thanks for sharing those facts.
Captain Spaulding Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 The paint sat overnight and looks more red today then orange. Just have to do some detailing and chrome then stick it together.
