Silverado C5R, My Corvette C5R turbo Race Truck

Recommended Posts

Hi al! For 2021 years Cannonball run I really wanted to join! My plan was initially to build the Corvette C5-R as a more stock looking C5 corvette and race it across the continent. I really wanted to open the hood to display the engine and address the windows to look more like the real deal, but due to the casting being out of thick plastic I did not feel up to the task! So I looked through my stash of body’s and found this short cab Silverado that seemed plausible for a conversion. The cab  started out as a glue bomb that I made as a teen.

I post it in this section since several other competitors have posted their builds here I thought I do the same!

The starting kit is the Revell 2001 corvette C5-R. Body and bed is from the Revell ‘99 Silverado that have been shortened to be a short cab.

After some hair dryer action to the chassis it was straight and flat enough to assemble the framerails. Time to measure and cut. I need to extend the chassis 12,7mm. Took the grinder to cut of the top parts of the cage. Used the saw to cut and extend the framerails. Base plate is next, then on to fixing the bedsides to the cab permanently.

Nice project!

I'm doing the C7R in stock form but after looking at yours I might change bodies as well. Still up in the air though.

Thanks!
Yes I saw that! Real cool! I was doing the same with the C5 but some thing with the body threw me off. Keep yours coming!

I'm really liking the stance on your Chev Anton !!

thanks! Me to, will raise the rear a little so it will be straight. 🙂

Made some steps in the right direction to night.
made the placement of the cab definite so now I have the final placement of the front wheels! Milestone! I narrowed the baseplate to70mm so it fits within the body. Actually just 1mm more narrow. I glued some supports to the body so the height to the chassis is set. Also made som progress on the cage. Will be a Revell 1/24 nascar cage with some height adjustments and some trimming. Fits better than the Vette or 911 cage I had.

Was mostly staring at the parts today.. but I managed to get hold of a second kit so I can rob glass of it. Will cut the new bed apart as well since I have noticed mine is not in the best shape. If I hadn’t so much work in this time frame al ready I might dig in to the problems and solve them but now.. na I get the other kit so I can rob it.

I managed to cut the bumper to try it out. Not sure if I like it.. looks to much like a nascar truck. I might go with a stock bumper after all, or I use this one and glue the part I just cut of. Would be like a 1 inch shoped bumper I guess.

Been doing some work. I am reusing the Silverado torpedo wall just making it smooth so I can adopt race parts to it.
Engine will have to come forward around 7 scale inches to clear the intake runners.. think I will make them smaller so i can show of the nice Katech valve covers. Time will tell. Had to straighten the chassis again after gluing it together. Some heat and it seems to be straight again.

Any thoughts, positive or negative, ideas or tips are highly welcome!

Looking good Anton

That engine really fills the bay (2thmbsup)

Thanks! Yes it does! I am thinking if I should cut the carbon fiber plenum off and put trumpets, as I presume they have inside of the plenum anyway. And make it so I can put them back if I like.. just to be able to show of the nice valve covers..

I made the decision to start gluing the frame rail to the chassis and suspension and paint it all in one go. The chassis is flimsy and I think it will aid my engineering process when things stay in place. Problem I had was that I some how need to get the transmission and parts in after gluing the rear bulkhead and tanks in place. At the same time I notice that the tunnel for the propchaft is of center since they have no passenger seat. So I will make a new transmission túnel so I can glue the tanks in with the frame rails and then ad the tunel after assembly of the transmission and before assembly of the interior and cage.

The stance is great!  Digging the direction you are going.

Thanks! I think it will be good!

I have an idea.. what if I relocate the radiator to the back for better weight distribution since the motor is moved forward so much. Hard thing would be to get air in, the bed is usually a low pressure zone so I guess air flow would be an issue so a bigger radiator would be needed. I don’t want to cut of the rear tailgate so an option would be to make channels on each side of the defusor to draw it out. But then again air is moving fast underneath the car since it’s flat so a risk would be that the pressure bellow is higher tan above.. Might be better to turn that around.. air from underneath and out over a wing on the tailgate.

Hum. Wonder if it’s worth it.. would create downforce I guess. We will see if I get so far or I just make it simple and put it in a traditional location..

Fascinating work, Anton, and very impressive. I love how brave you are in trying things out and being prepared to adapt your approach as required. Look forward to seeing & learning more!

Thanks for your kind words! I am an engineer and used to be cautious about model building.. but then I realized.. is plastic so it’s easy to repair 🙂

so I cut the rear bulkhead apart I can ad the transmission in an later stage and glued in the second frame rail.

Have been working on the firewall and cut once on my measurement.. but I measured wrong so glued it back together and will do that cut over again next time and measure better.

Made a quick mock-up with seats and some reinforcements for the front part of the frame. Which will be needed since I move the engine. NASCAR parts from the same Monogram kit that I have taken the cage from.

Ambitious project!  You given thought to "camouflage", such as a rusty patina, and maybe a firewood "load"?  The carbon Corvette valve covers are sexy.

Thanks! Yes it’s quite ambitious.. I have thought if I would throw a bike in the back.  But no rust, would have to be a “wrap” if so since in my mind the body is CF.
Those will be good looking when done, but the carbon you se is not the parts that I will use, will make new ones, those are from my PB for mock-up purposes. Where made by me before I knew of decal solvents.

I was looking at the decals for the '29 Model A Hot Rod, there are rust spots on it, for the patina look.  A bike would be cool, I have the Fujimi one that comes with the Thule cargo boxes, worth it just for the photo-etch spokes.

Cool, but no rust here ;) I have been looking at that one, looks cool but i am not sure if i want anything.. I mean a Silverado is nothing you wold race across the contry with. :D

Sorted the firewall after allot of measures.. the tunnel is in center but the hole is not symmetric. Made a new lower section of the firewall instead of my first attempt to use the C5R firewall. The holes for the exhaust will come later.
now I can place the engine and the transmission tunnel.234F5D60-4731-48C6-9194-83E1AEA24959.thumb.jpeg.1e96069af8389d181becb2041c7d4455.jpeg2CF0A4DB-68D5-4BF3-B697-99D43C9BB3A6.thumb.jpeg.9d8501ea5df899448ba9d8e234024e62.jpeg

  • 1 month later...

So I have not had much time at the desk for model work, I have been at the desk working allot. Have had a lot of projects that have had to be done this month for the mines.

I got some time to sit down today but I felt that I had to do some clean up to see what I have to work with. So a box clean was on the schedule.
can’t make up my mind on seats either.. alternative one is the stock Silverado seats.. or the Recaro fixed backs.

I got the new kit in and been looking at the custom hood and I am not a fan.. either I fix the stock hood or craft the center section out of the custom one and replace it with a flat surface.. or a C5 corvette bulge.

I have also been looking at the bed. The sides narrows to the back so the tailgate is more narrow than the front of the bed. I have two ideas, I’m either widening the tailgate so the bed sides are parallel or I do a wide arch fender, Or both. Have not made up my mind on that.

more pics hopefully during Easter if we don’t pack up and go to the summer cabin 🙂
