Interesting thing happened when I entered this roadster in a local show last weekend.

With four awards available (1st 2nd 3rd and OTB) and only five entries in the category (all Top Fuel rail jobs), I figured I might get some recognition.

Surprise...it got nothing.

The 1st place also got an OTB award.

I think I have more time and effort in just the scratch built supercharger, the scratch built interior,  or even front tubular shocks than the other entries.

While we all know judging can be and is usually subjective, I'm wondering if the trend is away from scratch building and detailing

(what with all the aftermarket parts out there) and going more to just a basic build.

Just my opinion but most people don't look past the paint finish when they evaluate a build.  Got to be super shinny to get their attention unfortunately.

Great build in my opinion.

Man, that is just hard to believe! What's wrong with those people?

Yeah, I was kind of surprised they gave all the awards to the four top fuel rail job/dragsters built from kits and I was the odd guy out.

I thought a vintage roadster/"dragster" that had a historic quality (highboy '29 on a '32 frame just as they did back then) and scratch-built components would stand out.

I've come to the same conclusion, - a smooth shiny polished paint job with ten coats of clear over decals with no edges showing seems to be required.

Funny thing though...I saw a couple of winners at this show that had obvious blemishes in the paint finish, and decals with excess clear part showing.

I have to agree J.C.  When it comes to some of these contests its the dazzling paint job under the lights that gets the most attention...unless theres a large degree of "wow" factor that can separate it from the rest of the stuff on the table. Even more telling is the chemistry of the judges...one seasoned builder among three or four newbies can dominate the results...for good or bad. In my brother's case here...I told him he had the misfortune of coming up against a crew that was clearly biased towards modern Top Fuel rails...in the Competition Straight Line category. I doubt they even connected Jim's build to its historic significance in hot rod history ( Tony Nancy's 22Jr ). To them it was just another Model A that belonged more in the pre 1949 street rod category.    ( even though a cursory inspection of the detailing showed it was a 50's era quarter mile car ).
