Zippi Posted March 14, 2021 Author Posted March 14, 2021 I'll thin it with windshield washer fluid next time and see how it works. I need to make a trip to the hobby shop and pick up some eye droppers.

I know my home brew thinner doesn't do that but I haven't shot a test yet, maybe tomorrow as I have some Ivory to try on one of my test bottles that is all primed up ready to go anyway.. I have mixed some and it's smooth and creamy as silk and stays that way, it should shoot fine. I'll report back after "the experiment " is complete. It should turn out fine.

What is your home-brew thinner? I ended up brush painting some aqua craft paint on the interior of my Nova, but if I can get it through my airbrush, I'm thinking it might start to be my preference for interior colors, largely because of the wide variety of colors available. Charlie Larkin Charlie, Is that the Revell Aqua craft paint your referring to?

No, the Revell paints (and Tamiya) have their own thinners, and you should use that for thinning paint. I'm talking real 50-cent/bottle craft paint, like Apple Barrel or Anita's. For cleaning the airbrush after any water-based based, have a bottle of 90% rubbing alcohol ready, and spray it through immediately, or you will have a problem. After spraying it through, back-flush the airbrush by blocking the nozzle with a paper towel. In the case of acrylics, and absolutely in the case of your Paasche H (which I also use), disassemble the airbrush, wipe everything down with a paper towel/napkin, and if you have some, run one of the disposable pipe cleaner (as in pipes you smoke) through the cone to make sure it's clean. If in doubt, soak the cone in the appropriate thinner (alcohol or lacquer thinner, which can be used for any solvent-based paint) for a few minutes. I'm cleaning my Paasche H with Lacquar thinner. I did buy some little Proxa Brushes that slip down the little hole pretty good.
TransAmMike Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 In choosing craft paint, my preference is Anita's. Funny, with Rustoleum purchasing Testors (I think thats how it went down) and now apparently discontinuing our beloved Model Master paint, they make the Anita's craft paint. Did Dave get back to you about his perfect homebrew?

Did Dave get back to you about his perfect homebrew? Haven't heard anything. Just got back from Hobby Lobby. Their Ceramcoat was on sale 40% off. I bought some greens, blue, and black. I'm going to mix a little black with the blue and greens to see if I can come up with a color for my Foose pickup.

If I remember, Daves concoction doesn't work well with the Ceramcoat.
Zippi Posted March 15, 2021 Author Posted March 15, 2021 Yeah....it may not. I know that the lacquer thinner works well but I want to try the windshield washer fluid. It's raining today so I'll try tomorrow.

I just got done shooting the test shot on a primed prescription bottle and all went well. So all I want to report is my thinner indeed works in this paint. If you like LT and it works then no argument from me. I can run that test tomorrow myself to make the comparison but I'm done for today.

RPM also owns the Rustoleum brand (along with couple dozen other brands). This is not a recent development! Rustoleum didn't purchase Testors because both are already owned by RPM!

I've used washer fluid exclusively with craft acrylics for a long time and have never had any issues with it causing problems... Folk Art, Ceramcoat, Americana, Anita's, etc. I like Folk Art best (I know Plaid makes off brands too) but all of them work just fine. Being so thin to start with causes the first couple of coats to bead up just a bit, but as you add coats it all blends together anyway. I dry each coat quickly with a mini hair dryer. The big downsides to craft paint is that they're really delicate until you clear them and they don't take to wet sanding (or dry for that matter unless you really build up many coats). Upsides are no odor, they spray nice if you get them thinned correctly, there are tons of colors and if you can't find what you want out of the bottle you can easily mix up your own. Oh, and they're cheap for those that pay attention to that. I still prefer shooting MCW or Scalefinishes, but depending on the build I don't have a problem at all with craft paints.

I've been re -experimenting or "re- visiting" perhaps the Pledge/Future. I go for a natural look Mike and have found in my later testing that somewhere around three coats of Pledge over craft paint and straight up buffing to a shine is something that catches my eye. I'm totally not into the buried in clear coat wet look as most of my builds are old cars in stock condition .
Dave G. Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 (edited) I sanded my Ceramcoat test shoot ( shot with one of my thinners in it, the most common one I use) from yesterday with a 3500 grit pad and it basically turned it semigloss lol. Smooth. That's the latest update on the Ceramcoat test shoot. Edited March 16, 2021 by Dave G.

I agree Dave about the over-clear look. A good smooth shiny gloss is sufficient.
Zippi Posted March 16, 2021 Author Posted March 16, 2021 (edited) Well....I didn't have any windshield washer fluid so I tried Windex to thin the Ceramcoat. Seem to spray just like the Lacquer thinner did. I mixed a little black with the midnight blue hoping to darken it up a little. I sprayed this on wood so I know it's going to be different on the plastic body. It did come out a little darker but just not sure if this is what I want for my Foose 56 Ford. Still playing around with my new Paasche H. Not really planning on spraying the body any time soon. I'm going to stick with this thread since it's the one I started. Edited March 16, 2021 by Zippi

Adding black alone will give you a grey blue. You need some red in the blue more than black. Then shoot that over a black base or black primer and you should be pretty close to midnight with that blue. Don't be afraid to go 3-4 coats of the new blue over the darker base coat..
