1/24 Meng 1966 GT40 MK2 Ken Miles Le Mans Build

Started this build about a week ago which I do build fairly slow. I will be attempting to build this as accurate as possible but it will have my twist on it and not be exact but close. I will be adding spark plug wires and possibly coolant lines, fuel lines and possibly brake lines. I have already modified the rear hatch by opening up the four air intake scoops which was challenging but well worth the effort. I have started assembly of the engine  and trans axle assembly which they still need paint detailing and I also have started painting the wheels but they still will need to be detailed.

Ray .... Yes the kit is engineered very well and so far there is hardly any clean up needed from mold lines.

Was able to get in some bench time in these last couple of evenings which all I basically got done was some painting and detail painting on the engine parts and trans and transaxle.One thing that will be a big challenge will be getting the chrome detail painted in the seats.

Ray ... Thank You.... I got to thinking today that I may try using the Molotow 1 mm on the seats but of course I will do a test run first on something similar.

Jason...... Its a really nice kit and the parts I have glued together have gone together smoothly........ only thing that bothers me is the way they engineered the engine assembly other than that the kit is awesome.

Just an idea....would a Molotow Chrome 1mm fine point be able to do the chrome on the seats??

Worked on the front and rear inner fender structures this evening which I filled in a few area’s from the molds and also removed and replaced the alignment pin on the cab with a piece of brass rod to strengthen it up.

I noticed it is kind of toyish looking but my thoughts is it is going to be stuffed in that engine bay.

Jason ...  Yes the engine will be fine in the engine bay .... I will be adding some detail to the engine like the plug wires and possibly some fuel lines but I did notice that the kit does not provide a ignition coil so I will be going to my parts box to find the appropriate coil to add to the engine bay.

Was able to get a little detail painting done on the radiator and the door pulls that are located on the door panels this evening and I also laid down the first coat of the blue on the inner fender supports as well.

Got home this evening and checked to see how the inner fender panel structures looked after the first coat of paint and noticed a few blotch’s so I sanded them lightly with 1500 sand paper then wiped them down and then shot them all with a few more coats of blue. I also decided to mock up the body with the interior door panels , dash and rear cab panel installed which I’m glad I did because it was not fitting correctly. So what I ended up doing was sanding down the backside of both door panels a bit and I thought I would have to sand down the top of the rear cab panel as well but as I inspected the fit of the panel it just need a little more finessing into the floor panel and then everything fit like a glove.

Saturday was a good day today which I was able to get the front of the motor detailed as well as getting two of the rear air ducts painted and some of the front and rear suspension parts. I was also able to get the last coat of paint on the the front and rear inner fender structures as well as getting the rear inner vents and the pedals painted. Tomorrow I may tackle tapping off the the undercarriage to get the areas that need to be painted the dark blue before I paint the rest of the body and undercarriage areas that will be painted the body color.

Seth...you are making very good progress so far. I notice you had a little trouble with the inner door panels and corrected it. So did I.  don't worry too much about the exhaust. It snaps into place easily. Just make sure it sits as low as possible near the collectors are at the back of the engine. They could interfere with the body so check it. Wouldn't hurt to sand the bottom of the engine either to make it fit lower in the chassis.  I had that problem with other kits like this. Have you figured out what to do with the seats ?

Thank You Rich and thank you for the info on the installation of the engine and the exhaust ... on the seats I'm thinking of maybe trying the Molotow 1 mm pen on them but I need to find something similar to test it out on.

Was able to get the undercarriage tapped off today which took a little over an hour to accomplish then I shot some Tamiya blue on the undercarriage as well as the top side now I’ll wait until she is nice and dry then I’ll shoot some Tamiya semi gloss on the undercarriage to tone it down a bit.

Drill out the grommets and use a silver art pencil that is sharpened to a fine point. just insert the tip and rotate. That's how i have done my Fujimi GTs.

I agree with Rick 100% but just to clarify, drill out the center of the grommet, not the grommet itself.

 The Meng seats are a little different than other Ford GT kits.  The center section of the grommet is raised (what should be a hole) and the outer round section is depressed.  I painted this section with a fine point brush and hi quality silver.  Then took a used magic marker with a slightly blunted point and lightly brushed over all the grommets. The top of the center section became black and the edges defined the round part of the grommet. Magic marker has a slightly purplish cast to it and a little bit of shine. Made the seats look like in had some wear on them.  This worked out the best for me after trying all the rest.  Hope this helps you Seth because this is turning out to be a really good looking project.
