My newest project is the M-B AMG GT.  I've had this kit in the stash since 2017 when I went to my first NNL East show in Wayne, NJ.  This is planned to be a box stock build.  My paint with be Tamiya TS-16 Yellow with a Tamiya TS-65 Pearl Clear.

Nice! I've been meaning to build something and paint it yellow. I'm interested to see how the TS-16 looks on the body shell. Please post pics of paint before and after the pearl clear.

Thanks Douglas!  A friend of mine has offered me an actual Mercedes tri-level paint in Solarbeam Yellow.  This is a base coat, mid coat and clear.  I will have to check it out first.

I had stripped the wheels of chrome in prep for some Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black paint.  The grille and the exhaust tips got a coating of Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black and taillights got a coating of Tamiya X-27 Clear Red.

The President of my Model Club gave me this Gravity Tri-Coat Solarburst Yellow paint for a good price.  Thank you Paul!  I didn't have any Gloss Black Lacquer paint for the wheels, so I used Testors Enamel Gloss Black paintI hope it doesn't let me down!  I painted the chassis with Tamiya Matt Black.  Now to let this all dry.

I started assembling the chassis with the engine, radiator, rear differential and the exhaust system.  I painted the suspension plates and the disc brakes.

Thanks Curtis!  Now to paint the body of my AMG GT.  A basecat, a midcoat and the clear.  This will take a while!

Well, I must admit that I am a little frightened of this paint.  Gravity Colors Solarbeam Yellow.  Three stages of paint!  Base coat, mid coat and clear.  I haven't painted this Mercedes yet, but I will soon.

If I can make a suggestion, tack the doors and any other pieces (hood?) that are going to be body color in place and do it all in one go. Matching multilayer paint in separate sections is really tricky, and it's all too easy to think you are treating each element exactly the same for it to become clear you weren't only when you bring the finished parts together...

best,

M.

Thanks Matt and Carl!  I like the suggestion Matt and I will consider it when I get to painting this Mercedes. Carl, since this is new territory for me, I will go with what I know to try and make the job a little easier.

Since I had my paintbooth up and running this afternoon, I went ahead and painted the Mercedes in the first of three colors.  The first is the basecoat of Solarbeam Yellow.  This will be followed by the mid-coat of metallic/pearl with a clearcoat being last.

This is looking great. Did you have to use a white primer over the grey, or did the yellow base coat go straight over the grey?

looking forward to seeing the finished paint job.

Sonny, most paints have a certain level of opacity. Thusly are affected in some way by the base color. So if you want a bright top coat, it is better to have a light base coat.

According to the instructions, I used a grey primer first, followed by the yellow basecoat.  This will be followed by the mid-coat of metallic/pearl and when that is dry, a clearcoat to help seal all of that and to give it some gloss.

I added the mid coat of paint today.  Since my air brush has been still for a month, I decided to give it a quick cleaning before I sprayed the mid coat.  Next will be the clearcoat.

I finally clearcoated the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT today.  This is three coats and I will polished the clear in a couple of days when it has dried.
