Just got the bad news, I was 1 of over 100 poeple that just got layed off from my company, Gunlockes. I had been here for only 6 months since moving up to NY from TN. So if I dont do much replying, or communicating ect, I will apologize now as I may be not in the mood, or I may be out applying for benefits like unemployment, or out beating the streets. Wish me luck guys! I will need it in this current economy so I can keep my three kids fed! Thanks. Jody

Right now you're probably wondering where your government bailout check is...

Aren't we all wondering where our government bailout checks are? I know I am. I feel for ya Jodi, I've been laid off since Dec 18. It's a bad epidemic that's been goin around lately.

Jody, sorry to hear that bad news. Hang in there, get right back up and get out there and find some work. Do not waste your time feeling sorry, get out there and find a job. You are bigger then this set back. A future employer will see that you are right out there looking and respect the fact that you are serious. Go kick some butt....the job market is tough but there are jobs available, you must want it. Every time I have hired someone (over the years I have interviewed hundreds and hired many people), I hire an "attitude". My feeling is I can train someone for the job task, but I can not successfully administer an attitude adjustment. Go in with the right positive attitude....you want that job and you are the best person for that job, and you will be very pleasently surprised at how an employer will react to that. Remember, they are ususally not sure what they really want or who they are going to see. Employers do not want to put a lot of time into the hiring process...they want it over as quickly as possible because it is time consuming and expensive. Show them that you are the right guy from the moment they lay eyes on you. Be positive, upbeat, confident in your ability and most of all, ready and willing to do what ever job is offered. GO GET IT! GET IT NOW! Good luck!

Hello. Thank you all for your kind words. Yes, we did see a lay off coming, but not quite so big, and there were several on disciplinary action, or on short time that were kept and others like me, that had only taken 2 hours of vacation off in the last 6 months. There were some who knew how to do only one job, I knew how to do everything in four different cells. I was also a cnc (morbidelli) operator and I was the only back up operator for two of them. There was only one other person who knew how to run mine and he was also layed off. So I was not expecting the layoff until they came and told me I had to go to a important meating at the time I was supposed to go home today! Because of this, I am rather upset over it yes. However I know that I will get over it. I will get another job. I have many times in my life! I am a little worried due to the fragile economy right now. But I know that the Lord will provide us our neccesities! Thank you all for your kind words. They mean alot to me! Jody

Jody, I also live in New York and we are going to relocate in the spring. New York is one of the worst states to live in to begin with. To be laid off is even worse in this state. I feel your pain. I'm in health care and even that profession is not safe any longer. We are seeing a hiring freeze, a halt to overtime and avid rumors of massive layoffs if things don't improve. You're in our thoughts and prayers. Keep your chin up and just keep the faith!

Jody,

Sorry to hear of your setback. I've been out of a job since May due to a company merger and haven't been able to find anything yet. I have actually been told (off the record, of course) that if I were 20 years younger, could live on minimum wages & part time hours, and didn't need health insurance I would be working tomorrow.

Maybe you can add a little income by ramping up your resin business a little and doing the eBay thing??? It's worth a shot!

Keep your spirits high and don't let the job market get you down! There is something out there for you somewhere!

Wow! That's a real downer Jody! I've been there so I know the feeling of being let go with short notice. :o At my job we had a memo sent the other day that we were getting no C.O.L.A. (Cost of living adjustment) due to the sagging economy.

I knew that 3 months ago even though I just recently got a good review a few weeks ago. :o

I even told some of the guys there that if we're all here 6 months from now I'll be pleasantly surprised------we have work now, but I can see things slowing down right now, so who knows? :o

My how times have changed!

I worked in a hospital back in the '80's when they were literally begging for nurses! In fact, I remember the hubbub about new hires getting something like 2-3 bucks more per hour than the other nurses just to get them in the door.

Just goes to show you nothing is "safe" anymore these days!

Sorry to hear that my friend, I work for a University and right now we are going through some furlough days which means that they are giving us one day off every pay period without pay for the next 3 months. Thank God I have a second job and can cover the losses from either job's days off. Hang in there man, I am sure something will come up. :o There is always someone hiring, you just have to have faith!!

Yes times are getting harder. See, what I didnt get is one guy was there less then 6 months and he only runs a edge bander. I ran every operation in several cells and was the only back up for a couple of CNC's. so I though I was more secure then others. The edgbander guy kept his job? He also had used all of his time and is on what we call short time, meaning one more call in and he is fired? They had let guys go that have ben ther 4 years, 10 years, 16 years and even 20 years. I see no ryme or reason to what they did. But it is not for me to question I guess as it is no longer important. LOL. Whats important is getting ready for the day and start putting in applications and go to a local food pantry. Tomorrow we apply for helpful services. Also today I call our phone company and see what I can do about lowering the bill! Jody

What a bummer! At least they waited until after the holidays though. I'm lucky in that I'm retired and draw a pension. I live in Citrus County, FLA now and our unemployment rate is at 9%. I can't even find a little part time job down here.

Hold your head high. You'll find something even better than what you had.

Hey Jody, sorry about the lay-off. Luckily, the economy hasn't hit San Antonio that much, yet.

I thought you lived in Sevierville? Man, that must have been hard to give up. Tennessee is beautiful. I imagine that a lot of Sevierville's economy is tourist based though.

Good luck.

Greg

gregbbear, yes I did used to be in Sevierville. As you stated, that is a area for tourism and vacationers. I had worked in a pizza joint and in a custom cabinet shop. The cabinet shop was going downhill because no one was buying new homes or spending the money to redo old kitches. That boss was my landlord. Also the pizza guy was starting to have some problems. So that help motivate us to move back to NY and help her family with her Grandfather who unfortunatly did not last long.I got news in the last couple of weeks that the cabinet shop is barely hanging on and it is down to two part time shop helpers! So I would have been out a couple of months ago! The guy with the 2 Hungry Howies, Ponderosa, Waffle House and a Pizza stand in a Arcade and closed all doors and is trying to sell them and find a job before he loses his house and goes into bankrupty again! So I would have lost that one as well. At least here we have family and we were able to make it through Christmas for the kids! Believe us though, we sure miss TN greatly!! Cant wait for the right time this time to go back down! May be in 2 years, may not be for 20 years, but we sure cant wait!! Thanks. Jody

Sorry to hear of your bad news, Jody. I was out of work for 6 months. Finally got a small

part time gig only about 10 hours a week, but thankful even though I have no insurance.

Stay positive, send resumes and knock on doors. You never know what will happen.

Good luck !

I understand how the model cars become a non-issue..........

It's tough right now and for those who have jobs, say your prayers every day !

I am new to the site, but I would like to extend some warm wishes from the north. I have been there myself, and my wife always said," when one door closes, another opens", stay positive, stay confident. Mike
