Still wanna get a few more coats on (already likely 8 to 10 coats to get it red enough)

This is why I didn't want to thin the paint when I did them.

Depending on the paint, thinning can affect the coverage qualities quite a bit.

I preferred fewer coats with a little bit of clean up.

Well of course, yours look great.  These tires are a different set than the ones you used...not that that makes any difference, just sayin'.

I'm sure I would have had a better look with a more glossy paint. As you know craft paints (at least the one I used) dry flat.

Now, did you use any sealer coat over the tires??   Don't need the tires to be glossy but need the red to stand out a bit more.

The flat will be fine as long as it's covering okay.

If the tires have any age to them at all, they would look pretty much flat any way.

I didn't use any sealer or anything.

They came out exactly how I was hoping that they would.

The craft paint shouldn't need one either.

Once thoroughly dry, it shouldn't go anywhere.

Just as Steve stated, mostly all tire lettering, white walls, red stripes are flat on the 1:1 cars. If I decal, use gel pen, or paint, tires, I usually mist the finished tire with dull cote to take away some of the sheen, if it doesn’t appear flat enough.

Be careful using enamel.

I can’t say what the results will be on these resin tires, but I have kit tires that I painted white walls on 20 years ago that still haven’t dried properly.

Some kind of weird reaction between the enamel and the tire.

Steve brings up a really good point and I thought, for the sake of others who may read this thread in the future, I should clarify a few things.

You really should not use enamel paint on kit vinyl type tires. It just never dries. Stick with acrylic. Now why in the world did I use enamel? The Chaparral 2D was my 2021 Annual 24 Hour Model Build entry. The kit had decals for the gold rings but they failed on me. Time to punt. I had the gold enamel and thinner on hand. Because the paint would be down in a groove and not up on the tire face I felt it was a good and safe "plan B".

But yeah, don't use enamel on kit tires.

Good point. Great info for some beginners, and advanced builders. Vinyl and enamel are a no-no. Also when I use some of Protech’s braided wire, I actually forgot that simple rule. As I stripped the braided part off to expose the wire, and it’s insulation, I just so happened to paint the insulation with enamel chrome paint, to replicate hard line, and it didn’t dry. Every thing I touched had the paint all over it.

I have experienced this as well with raised white letter tires. Really really old white enamel EVENTUALLY solidifies.

(I have since moved on to white Gelly Roll ink pens)

This post just made me consider that an instance like this might be a good opportunity to try thinning the enamel with lacquer thinner and trying that route.

Do you suppose that the lacquer thinner might correct the enamel drying issue on vinyl tires?

I decided after finishing the tires and them looking good, to take the red back off. Just not red enough for my liking without the white undercoat.  Got white on now and will use a Model Master gloss acrylic red that I have. I'm hoping will look better.

I believe I finally got them presentable.   Waterbased white base, MM Chevy engine red acrylic, overcoated, just the red, with dullcoat.

Those tires look pretty good there Buddy.  Nice job.
