Thanks Bill.? I was pretty sure it did, but wanted to be sure. Just curious, are all the gussets out onto the axle tubes representative of a particular real one? I’ll likely need to file them off anyways.

This is what it's supposed to represent, more or less. Cast aluminum axle bells.

Not the best one to start with for a street car running the older style QC.

What kinda car, what period are you wanting to put one under?

I want to put one under a tubbed ‘32 Ford, but I also want to make castings for possible future use. I mainly want one for the narrowness on the ‘32. Accuracy to the 1:1 world isn’t completely necessary for myself. Maybe I’ll fiddle with modifying it or even scratch building one??

That does not compute (in my tiny little brain, anyway). :D

In that case, just cut the axle tubes shorter.

Seriously, I go to a lot of trouble to get my QC installations to be pretty close to right, mix and modify parts, etc., so I really don't know what to tell you.

BUT...the AMT double dragster kit has two pretty good earlier style QC units, typical of several in other AMT kits with steel axle bells...and a bajillion other cool parts too.

Maple Leaf Modelworks sells a a couple different quick change packages on Shapeways, either just the axle or with frame members for the new Revell 29/30 kits or the Revell 32s.

Thanks Brian. They do look beautiful. Once again shipping makes them pretty pricey.? I picked up the MPC kit from a local hobby shop and will see what I can do with it first.

Ditto on the Shapeways shipping,  plus they add handling charge and of course tax?   A lot of cool stuff on their site just not worth it IMO.

I agree, I typically wait until there's a few things I want because a single item gets a bit expensive.

Greg,

The quick change in those modified kits represents a 70s era rear end.  The monogram sprint cars would have a more modern version. The reissue kushman duster kit has a quick change as well.  A little more detailed than the modified and slightly longer axle tubes.  I don't know how well any of those would transfer over to a street car.  My familiarity with them is in the race cars.  Hope I helped a little.

Thanks Jeffrey. The one in the MPC kit isn’t great, so I am in the process of scratch building one.?

This is what I have so far.? I downsized a couple of schematics and printed the profile on some self adhesive label paper. Stuck the pic on a sandwich of two pieces of .080” styrene and filed it to shape. Then I punched some .080” discs and sanded them to a taper. I used the printout to mark the centerpoint and all the bolt holes on the .030” flanges. Little strips of .015”x.020” evergreen make up the gussets. It may not be correct, but it will look better than the MPC piece. I will use the MPC rear cover though.

I remade the center section in two halves. It will make it a lot easier to cast. I drilled a shallow pilot hole for some 5/32” axle tubes.  The tube will accept a piece of coat hanger for an axle. Once the resin halves are glued together, I can drill straight through for a one piece tube. It’s not perfect, but good enough for my purposes and way better than the MPC piece in my mind.?

For anyone researching this in the future…the Revell Moving Violation ‘41 Willys pickup has a pretty nice one. I just found this in my stash while looking for some deep dish rims.?

If I remember correctly the '25 T Double kit has a very good representation of a quick-change and there is an acceptable image of one in the Revell T Roadster kit.  Kind of a late post since you have already resin cast your own scratch-built unit, which by the way is a very nice-looking unit.

Beautifully cast. I need to learn how to cast small parts for my own use...
