Bullybeef Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 (edited) As I usually do, I randomly find a picture on the internet and decide to try to replicate it. I started with a less than perfect 29 roadster body(amt), grafted a 31 cowl(Revell) and raised the parts box for a suitable flathead and suspension pieces. So far this is what I’ve come up with! Wheels are from the amt 36 ford, rear axle is parts bin mystery, frame is an old amt kit piece that was less glue bomby than the rest. I think with the modifications to the frame I’ve got the engine setback correct and the level of hackery to the firewall to allow the setback is pretty close. I’ve never actually succeeded in replicating rust but I’ve done a ton of research. Follow along as I try not to beans this up. Edited January 19, 2023 by Bullybeef Uodate 6

ea0863 Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Your build is coming out so good, and the car you're patterning it after was so ingenious! Someone made a front mounted mid-engine out of a 30's car - - - so cool! 2

Bernard Kron Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Looking forward to this one. I recently finished a similar project, a tribute to an as found patina '30 Ford Roadster that inspired me from a Jalopy Journal article (the di Falco Roadster(. I used an gAMT ;29 Roadster body but I didn't go all the way and make the conversion to the '30. It's good to see that a Revell cowl will fit. Since you say "31" I assume that's the Sedan kit that was used, yes? 1

Since you say "31" I assume that's the Sedan kit that was used, yes? Yea Bernard, the cowl was from the 31 sedan, visually from what I can tell, it’s near enough for me. The cowl itself is a tinch wider, but because the car will not have a traditional interior it was ok to widen the body unless you get a micrometer you can’t tell the difference. So far the parts tally: amt roadster body, amt 29 frame, revell 31 cowl, atlantis(nee revell) front axle, suicide perch from the mooneyes dragster. Spring plates from the revell 32 series, flathead engine from the amt 39 mercury. Wheels are from the amt 36 ford. Rear axle I believe is also a revell piece. Because I’m limited in my ability to see the rear axle and mounts I’m going to use a traditional setup. 4
Calb56 Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Very cool. I'm digging this a lot. Also, cool to see the 1:1 interior photos, I've been looking for good ones to scratch a bare 29. 1

Calb56 Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 I don't know, I was happy with seeing the door panels! 1
misterNNL Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Great stuff, I'll be following along for sure. 1

Thank you both, I’ve been busy chasing squirrels out of my build area for a couple of days, there is a very good reason that I don’t have my kit stash close to my build bench. i should have some progress shots on the interior here soon.
Bullybeef Posted December 20, 2022 Author Posted December 20, 2022 Okay so this one got away from the bench for awhile, with the blustery winter set in up here in the GWN I figured it was time to blow her dust off the plans and make some headway on this. Started the fab on the interior panels. Because of the rough made in the backyard look it will be fairly easy to replicate as it does not seem it was built to any spec or even proper measurements, I’ll be able to hide some sins with paint and it’s the rough general look I will be going for. 6

Thank you, matching the interior should not be a problem, hoping to bang this and a few others across the finish line by the end of the year, should be my most fruitful harvest of builds. I may even attempt to do a parts box build.

If I don't my wife will kill me for wasting so much money! 1
Kenmojr Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 Amazing work. Love what you are doing with this rat rod. Hopefully the Oilers will pick up their play a bit. 1
NOBLNG Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 Nice work! That is about the most realistic rust/weathering job I’ve seen.? 1
Bullybeef Posted December 21, 2022 Author Posted December 21, 2022 Well I’m pretty happy with the base run of the interior panels, I’m not going for 100% accuracy here, just as close enough for government work kinda close. The rust base will have multiple layers and chipping to get the desired finish. All that will be left will be the weathering of the wheels, exhaust and a cooling system. I’m sure I’ll think of others to add in as I go. stay tuned for the continuation of the Hinman roadster. and thank you gentlemen for the continued support. @kenmojr it’s a survivor hotrod not a rat rod and I’ll never be an oilers fan! 3
Dennis Lacy Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 I remember it well when the Hinman Roadster was unearthed and followed intently on Instagram as it’s new caretaker, Eli English, made it road worthy again and then races at TROG. It’s an incredible piece of hot rod history! I think you’re doing a great job on your scale replica so far. It definitely captures the essence of the full scale car. 1

Thank you @Dennis Lacy, achieving the finish on this model is way harder than any other I’ve worked on in my past two years. I appreciate your comments.
