KWT Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) So this is going to be my first build.. ok, started build... of 2023. I'm come up with a plan to keep me somewhat motivated this year, since this year I didn't start building anything til like september. Ok, so.... Like most of you, I took a hiatus from the hobby because of life, only to return with a re-ignition of sorts.. When i got started back in this, I dug out what I have left of the kits from back then... some survivors.. some in pieces... The last couple weeks I've been looking them over. Reliving some of it... Trying to figure out why I did some the way I did... Trying to decide if I've improved or not... just enjoying myself really... when it hit me... I'm gonna make new builds of my old builds for comparison for myself. And the best part, I love these old Monogram kits and since that's what most of them are its a win/win for me... so.... 20+ yrs ago this was one of last models I built and probably one of my best efforts.. It's been stored in a box or case ever since... I remember it being painted Testors Competition Orange, so I'll have to come up with an alternative for that... anybody have any suggestions? And for this build, I'm going to be using the new release... We'll pick this build back up in 2023... stay tuned... Edited December 27, 2022 by KWT 3
Joe Nunes Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 It would be nice to clean the dust off the first one you built and build the new kit release as you want it to be now. Then set them side by side for a nostalgic comparison. A nice then and now experience. Joe
KWT Posted December 27, 2022 Author Posted December 27, 2022 Well since you mentioned it... As I was putting the built one back in its place, the back bumper fell off. Next thing I know I've got the grill, chassis and interior out... I'm gonna clean it up so it'll be a fair comparison when I'm finished. 3
Bills72sj Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Good luck on your new build. I keep looking at some of old ones thinking I should take another swing at them. However, with the too many kits I have acquired I am seriously distracted.
slusher Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Jeremy, I have my builds from 39 years ago and have them in AMT cases and the ate as clean as when I built them . The more we build we can do it better then past ones. I would find an orange in the Tamiya line. Ii always liked the Testors compition orange years ago but better paint out their now.
mustang1989 Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) I'll be tagging along for this ride Jeremy. I've rebuilt a couple of my older builds in recent years and I still have two untouched builds, one of which is in my display case and looks like the day I built it 36 years ago. Like Carl, I kept them in the old Jo-Han display cases for 3 decades. I think I still have a couple of those left that aren't all yellowed. lol Looking forward to seeing what you do here. mrmike Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Since you've got it apart, you might as well head for the kitchen sink and wash that old build with an old toothbrush and some dish washing detergent.

Oddly enough, this one was in a case in the box... not sure how all the dust got to it. Maybe it sat out before I boxed them up. That would make it vintage dust too On 12/27/2022 at 6:46 AM, mustang1989 said: I'll be tagging along for this ride Jeremy. Glad you dropped in here. I'm may be picking your brain with some of my plans this year... provided I don't lose my focus. mrmike Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 The least you can do is to clean it and slap it back together again. Since it is apart, you can repaint, repair and rebuild it better than before.
KWT Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 Well I'm happy to say I got started modeling today. I started prepping the body of the new build.. can't wait to get it ready to paint. And I also got the old one washed up. I'm gonna touchup the "chrome" trim and slap this one back together just like it was 20+ years ago.. Looking forward to the comparison when I'm done. Stay tuned... 2
KWT Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 Thanks Steve and Carl 1 minute ago, slusher said: Nice clean body, looks like a new build! I'm actually more impressed with it than I thought.. The rest of the Revell/Monograms in the box that I'm planning on tackling are not on the same level.
KWT Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 I've got the body about ready for the first coat of primer. I'm sure I've missed something I'll have to got back over.
ModelcarJR Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Jeremy, I found it easier to tape off the canisters and the battery before paint. The cannisters you could leave in white plastic and hand paint the battery. Just a thought! 1

Keef Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 I love this kit, it builds up so well! Here’s one I built a few years back for inspiration.
KWT Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 (edited) Did a little tinkering yesterday. I cut off the mounts for the leaf springs, from the chassis plate. It's hard to tell from the photos, but it dropped the rear a tad leveling it out some. Here's a comparison side by side with the old build. Now to get the body in primer and see where to go from here... Stay tuned... Edited January 8, 2023 by KWT
KWT Posted May 14, 2023 Author Posted May 14, 2023 (edited) Well work, and the weather, has gotten me a little further behind this year than I meant to be.. well that and working on my bud's 70 1/2 Camaro build... But I'm happy to say I have finally got this in primer. I did better with the initial body work than I thought... gonna smooth this out, get another coat sprayed and hopefully get some paint laid down soon. Stay tuned... Edited May 14, 2023 by KWT 1
atomicholiday Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 That's looking really good so far. I've never built this one, but I love Monogram kits from that period (well, pretty much all periods if truth be told). Glad to see you're just cleaning up the old build and not totally redoing it. You've got the right idea. It's a part of your history in the hobby and can act as a benchmark for where you were and where you're going. Keep up the good work!
David G. Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 It's great that you still have the Roadrunner from all those years ago Jeremy. It cleaned up quit nicely and looks great. Do you plan to build the new one to match the old one? I think it would be a fantastic way to show how much your skills have improved over the years. Nice work so far, the body looks great in primer. David G.

Nice work so far, the body looks great in primer. David G. Yes sir. My original intention was to build it and tweak it some here and there. I've recently decided since I'm doing a comparison, I should do it to match. So I'm going to make it fairly true to the original, just with knowledge I have now. Since I'm actually building two of these, I've swapped the tweaked parts out for the originals. I just hope when I get done, it shows I've improved... if not... this thread may disappear
