Show n' go AMT '62 Fairlane

I picked up an AMT 1962 Fairlane at Das Awkscht Fescht in Macungie, PA on Saturday.  It had bee professionally stripped of paint, but was missing the hood, engine, fender ornaments, and tail light panel.

Back in the Modelhaus days, I would have for replica stock, but now I had the challenge (or freedom) of alternative versions (Gasser? Rat Rod? Post-apocolyptic zombie chaser?).  I decided to go with an early '60's Kustom/Drag car.

The trim and door handles were sanded off and  the fender ornament holes were filled with Bondo.  I separated the front grill from the bumper, stripped the chrome, and shot Molotow chrome through my airbrush.  The custom front grill had been in my parts stash, along with the unknown tail light panel.  The wheels are from the AMT '32 Vicky kit; the tires are AMT items.

I'm planning on using the Olds engine from Revell Beatnik Bandit (no use for a hood!).  Color will be a custom mix of Testor's enamel Purple Metalflake and Metallic Silver for a metallic orchid color, reminiscent of the old '60's Pactra metallics.  Luckily, most of the custom interior parts were included, so I'll be using 'em.

I will be watching this one. I started building model cars in 1962 when i was 10 and this was the first model i ever built i got a glue bomb about 22 years ago and Modelhause was the place to go to get all the replacement parts to rebuild it and just 9 years ago i found an unbuilt complete kit online at modelroundup i have not started that one yet. In 62 i got the kit at the local 5 and 10 store for $1.49 i paid $35.00 for the glue bomb and $38.00 for all the parts to repair it and the complete kit i paid $150.00 for plus I will have to send the chrome out to be rechromed over the years in the box it has got very dull.

I got some color on the Fairlane.  While it looks like a satin color, I'm hoping that some polish will bring out more of a shine.  It looks like I'll be going for the Halibrand-style chrome wheels from the AMT wheels parts pack

Very nice, that was a great annual when they came out. VERY hard to come across now. I have a '62 Galaxie glue-bomb in the works, I have to take some pictures. I scored better bumpers at the NNL East this year. I was lucky it came apart without breaking anything like the glass and interior tub. I swear by those PE saw blades that Model Car Garage makes.

I completed the interior.  The main color is Testor's Purple Metalflake Enamel, with the dashboard and headrest frames painted a contrasting orchid.  In keeping with the early 60's theme, I used the shifter, tape recorder, and speaker from the AMT 1963 Chevy II stationwagon.  The photo reduced early 60's Rod & Custom magazines are covering some major glue rash where seat belts had been attached.

I found an engine that would fit the Fairlane.  The Revell parts pack 283 Chevy engine fit with out any major headaches (unlike the Beatnik Bandit Olds engine, which was like trying to stuff 20 lbs of manure into a 5 lb sack).  The intake manifold is from the 21st century Monogram Slingster dragster.  I clear coated the body with Testor's Wet Look lacquer, which (sort of) elimanated the satin look.

I still have some details to attend to; next stop Under Glass!

Look'n great. Love the lavender perfect period color.  , , I would have went with the engine from an AMT '66 Mustang, but that's just me.

BTW, seen a 1/1 on the street here in Fredericton last weekend. It was in a champagne gold color, didn't get a pic though.

One last post before Under Glass.  I finished the Fairlane with decals from the re-popped AMT '34 Ford truck, side pipes from the AMT '49 Ford, tailights from the AMT '57 Ford, rear grill from the AMT '62 Buick, and antennas from the AMT '64 Fairlane.  That's it! (Finally)
