As is my usual custom, while working on a more major project, I decided to throw something together just for fun and to keep me busy. Not too long ago, I had seen the AMT 1932 Ford "Vicky" done up in Hot Wheels decals and thought it might be a nice project.

Looking around online though, I was distracted by an earlier version of this car done by AMT (then called a 1932 "Vickie") and sold as a Custom Shop "predecorated" model. Pictures generally suggested the body had been painted and would be sort of a quick builder. I picked one up for about $25 and threw it aside for a rainy day.

When I recently opened it up, all I could say was "WOW"! Not only was the body and interior painted, but each and every detailed part was precut, painted, individually wrapped, and sequentially numbered to match its excellent instruction manual.

I came to realize this was a fully detailed kit with wonderful parts - not only for a stock build, but for any sort of kit-bashing. The only thing dated about it IMHO was the 4.6L Cobra V8 which is straight out of the 90's, but suited me just fine for this build. The frame, suspension, and rest of the drivetrain though are timeless beauties.

What you see below is a stock build. Aside from a little touch up with a Molotow pen and some Testors Panel Line on the engine, what you see is what came out of the box. Oh, I did add a bit of "Tail Art" (mounted too far back to be called "Nose Art" :)), and of course her name is "Vickie".

The only truly custom touch came to me when I was unboxing and noticed the packaging which perfectly fit the body and hood...

Little bit of cutting, fitting, "stitching" with a rivet tool, and painting later - voila! A great tonneau cover.

I am already sourcing a few more of this kit just for future kit-bashing, and have already ordered an AMT Pro Shop 1939 Wagon Rod. It will be a great build for the winter when I cannot get outside to paint, but still want to enjoy modeling. There are actually a whole bunch of great models in the Pro Shop series, and I may get a few more...including a 1957 Chevy such as built by @Hi-Po :)

Very cool. I like the vynal roof treatment on the hardtop. These kits have a lot of good parts. Well done.

Cheers,

David. ??

Thank you kindly David.

I built their Viper from this series, and like you was impressed at how well they had prepped it. Brilliant idea for the tonneau cover!

Thanks Bill

Great looking build. I didn't realize how complete these were until now.

Me neither. And depending on the model, they are quite reasonable (the Custom Shop Nomad is probably one of the more expensive at over $100, but a Phantom Vickie is easily found under $25).

This kit is a great foundation for a 32 hot rod.  The fenders from a revell 32 will fit if you want fenders.  Other bodies will fit.  I know AMTs 32 Phaeton will fit, so I assume there others will as well.

Engine choices can be from anywhere as well.  Just like a real rod.

I had the custom shop version when it came out, too.

So everyone should get whatever version is current and use it in your hot rod building.

Great to know Randy, thank you for the information.

The tonneau cover is a great touch, it makes up for the custom hard top. I still have some bits and pieces of an incomplete kit that a friend gave me, the most coveted part being the Duvall windshield that I still have earmarked for a custom build.
