I see a lot of people on youtube spraying their convertible cars with the supports going between the empty space at the top of the car. How do they remove the supports without making touchups afterwards?

I can’t think of any situation that wouldn’t require a small touch up if the part is painted on the tree or a must “remove” unless it in an area that will be covered by another part. The manufactures of kits are doing a better job of parts being molded with the locating pins at the sprue.

So then how do you put it on a base to paint?

Make yourself one of these out of a wire coat hanger and a block of wood.?

I also made my own with a scrap piece of plywood and an old coat hanger.  I covered the ends of the coat hanger with tape so it will not scratch the body.

And once I make one of those kinda bases, how do I clean them afterwards? I heard that sometimes uncleaned paint flakes off into a paint job

I glue a thick sprue piece with CA to the roof right where a dome light would go. I then hold the body with an alligator clip on a bamboo stick. It permits spraying and viewing every square inch of the body without obstruction. A model box full of corrugated strips glued together holds the item while spraying other parts.  When done, the sprue piece snaps off cleanly where I can the touch up with interior paint or make a dome light.

Certainly doesn't require anything fancy.

I bent this coat hanger in about 30 seconds 20 years ago and have used it for painting every body since.

A couple of short pieces of tape on the inside of the body will hold it in place just fine.

I second Steve's coat hanger method. As an added bonus you can hang the body upside down to minimize the chance of something landing on it while it's drying.
