Didn't they cut and alter the fenders? Seems like i read an article once that said they actually would narrow the grill and bumpers. You can see in the pictures below the front ends appear to be altered.

Yes Scott, your correct. As I researched the early years, by 72 they were really modifying these car and bending the rules, much like NASCAR. Herb McCandless YouTube video on his Demon really explains the extent they went to to get the upper hand. I struggle enough with my builds,  let alone trying to section fenders to droop them. NHRA actually later made the rule, no drooped front ends.

Here’s a small update on a large problem. It took a lot of thought ( for me anyway), but I raised everything up to get the stance correct. I removed the inner fenders, I sanded the cowl to lower it, and I shortened the K member. I scratch built new spindles. I’m happy with how the front sets now.

Beautiful work, getting that front end down, Roger! The grille looks great, too. May have to find one of those, for mine, as well.

I’ve engineered this in my head for weeks now and I was finally able to get it mocked up. I’m very satisfied with how it’s sitting as it’s as close as I’m going to be able to get it without starting over. I don’t think on a real racecar there would be enough suspension travel, so I’m aware of the inaccuracies, but it ought to look right on the shelf.

Looking sweet Roger! Thanks for the heads up on the grilled from Few Sprues Loose. I got 4 of them!

Thanks Rich. They are nice, I like to have  the 73 Dodge Sport grill also!

I like it, on the shelf is a good look!

Thanks Rooster, a tad bit lower would be nice, but it’s pretty close.

Looking good Roger!  Those coil overs from Mr. Model are awesome.

Thanks Terry, I ordered 4 more yesterday. I’m thinking with some forethought and careful measurements these could be shortened when being assembled to help establish the correct ride height. Trimming the steel spring may be the biggest obstacle.

Comparatively speaking, maybe a little less tire would do the trick.

I’m sitting here drinking my coffee and staring at it and trying to decide if I can tweak it just a little more. I thought why not compare it to my California Flash as a reference point. I’ll probably leave it as is, now on to the ladder bars.

Looking good Roger. That stance is perfect?

Thanks Scott, I think it’s pretty darn close.

It’s looking fantastic Roger.  I agree with Scott.  You nailed the stance.  Billy’s car was really low in the front.

Lots of cool cars and racers out of Dayton, Ohio but Billy was always one of my faves.

Sorry for the delayed response Mark, thank you, my next area of concern will be headers ?

More great work. Your attention to detail and accuracy is on point…

Thank you Tony! I’m not sure why it’s important to me, but I like my builds to look accurate.

That looks great!  That's the stance I had hoped for with the McCandless car but I didn't take the mock up far enough ,not enough engine-to-hood clearance ,,,looked good with the long block during test fitting though...lol . When I do the Whisnant Duster I'll use the COMPLETE engine

Thanks Scott,  I’ve had this thing mocked up a hundred times already and still making changes.

I’d like to wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July!

This may be my last post for a while, as my wife and I have listed our house for sale, and are hoping to return to Georgia to be near our girls.

I wasn’t completely satisfied with the height of the rear of the BTK Demon and wanted to get past this last hurdle before having to pack everything up. I enlarged the holes in the floor pan to recess the top of the coil over shocks, I then made a .030 spacer and a new mount for the shock stems to rest in. Not completely accurate by any means, but this is my first coil over rear suspension and I’m making adjustments and concessions to avoid creating a completely new chassis. I’ve learned a lot with this and I think I will be good with the final build. I’m getting a little impatient and would really like to move on to some painting.

I hate moving!?
