Old Nasty Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Does anyone have a technique to duplicate wrapped exhaust pipes? I'm talking about the wrapped tape around the pipe. I considered scraps of old t shirt & white glue but perhaps there is a better way. Any thoughts?
stitchdup Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 maybe a sticking plaster/band aid cut into strips and stretched before applying could work. its might be too thick if you dont stretch it 1
64SS350 Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Masking tape cut to width, narrow cloth type ribbon??
Tom99 Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Try wrapping strips of toilet tissue around the part, than add some glue over it.
CaddyDaddy Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I’ve cut thin strips of “cloth” medical tape and wrapped with that. Gives it nice texture. Then, I brush paint the tape with flat white, adding a little bit of tan weathering powder.

Works really well for larger scale models, but even with the weave and overall thickness being a bit out of scale for 1:24/25 models, I think it will look good.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I think the cloth tape is better for larger scales, old-style cheap thin white masking tape, painted/weathered for the smaller scales. This is not based on personal experience, but rather on looking critically at other people's models.
dusty_shelf Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 One thing I want to experiment with is lens cleaning wipes. They are designed to not break down or leave lint. They are quite strong and can easily be cut into lengths when dry. Being very thin, they should be to scale for a number of applications. 1

Color depends on what the effect is to be.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 The thing to remember is that, though it's a very heavy texture in 1:1... ...the smaller scale you get, the more the texture becomes invisible... 1

Old Nasty Posted January 28, 2024 Author Posted January 28, 2024 Thanks to all for the advise. I've got a couple ideas.

Lens wipes generally are silicone treated and I advise keeping silicone away from your models. It will prevent paint adhesion and will tend to contaminate nearby parts through handling.
