Great subject.

Thanks Chuck!

I didn't have much time this wknd, our daughters birthday party ate up 2 days..but the cupcakes were awesome!

Today the rain showed up, so much for yard work yeahhhh! I'm tired of weeding flower beds lol

I decided to model the T800 w dual air cleaners. The plaskit hood is designed for an internal type...so I penciled in a swoop to access the kit air cleaner holes, then sanded away the excess. 20240527_170444.thumb.jpg.68f26df7d1617d4d46b57410c4e1e835.jpg

If anyone decides to take this route..be forewarned theres more surgery ahead!  I didn't take into account clearance for the air cleaners..photos showed the fenders are cut making little extensions. This for me is part of the fun kitbashing, finding the surprises and solving the dilemma, something I don't get from OOB. Heres where I plan to split them, right above the tape 20240527_195315.thumb.jpg.eb13d3db5a5ad1477c8338e9b7d628f5.jpg

Before I broke out the razor saw a quick mockup revealed a gap between the cab and fender extensions, I might use pieces of the kit hood to fill..we'll see

Thanks for following

Looking good! 'm in the same area of progression. I referenced and made a template for air cutouts and split fenders.

Jeff, nice project I really like what you’re doing. I’m very interested in your bottom dump trailer do you have more info about it and what your plans are for it.

Hey Dan, thanks for following! The bottom dump parts were passed along to me from the family of a departed icon of the model truck community we recently lost. I was asked if I would finish what he started, and down the road possibly parts will be available for others...

Wow, I was going to do the same thing with the breathers, never gave it a thought about the lower fenders, glad I am watching this build.

Hopefully it will help your project!

My fenders didn't fit tight to the cab, so after separating them from the hood, I taped them in place to measure the gap.20240528_183104.thumb.jpg.99cdc4227cc6782b7547ef2436a5cdfd.jpg

I ended up w a 040" gap on drivers side, and about 2mm on riders. I split the extension down center and filled the space...who said watching TV isn't helpful, I got the idea from custom car building lol

I have several of these hoods.  I got them years ago from Plastic when he first offered them.

Daniel actually made a one with external air cleaners.  I'll see if I can find the photo.

I reached the paint stage today, base coated w sterling silver for the Tamiya Mica red to follow...20240602_175735.thumb.jpg.85bbfb6af095c7c586ed841f5a530b2d.jpg

This was before clear, so it's gonna dull down.

The engine was painted w Pollyscale CP yellow, something I had on the paint rack.20240601_225031.thumb.jpg.a1f952ffb5f2a1154987cfc36ca64fb1.jpg

Now to wrap up the frame, and this will be moved to final assembly

Hi Jeff! I’m not normally over here in the rig section, made a wrong turn somewhere maybe? Great looking build you have going here. I have a few rigs in the que, but will be a bit before I get to them. I’ll definitely need some help once I get going!  A suggestion for “toning down” the chrome on the wheels, I use one or 2 LIGHT coats of Tamiya smoke. The key is light coats, and make sure the paint is warm. Just a thought, if it’s not too late. The other option might be flat clear for a more “aluminum” look.

Cheers, Steve

@Steve H thanks for stopping by the truck stop, there's a ton of helpful builders around here.

I'll try you tip on the wheels, I'm messing around with them this week

I do peak over here once in a while. You “truck guys” do a lot of beautiful work. Not sure if you would remember, but a few years back I built a phantom 66 Olds el Camino. Your beautiful 72 Olds el Camino build was a perfect reference, and I used a similar approach for my build. I thanked you then, and I thank you again now. I know when I eventually get around to the rig build that I will be in very good hands over here. Good luck with the wheels.
Cheers, Steve

Rain kept us inside today, so before my wife suggested I help w housework..I disappeared to the bench...

The frame was painted Tamiya gunmetal, then details picked out in flat black. I built the missing fan shroud from a pill bottle while other parts were drying.20240605_180010.thumb.jpg.3c66b4c9648bd894cc49630c98a3a108.jpg

I attached the headache rack, and deck plate after a quick shot of Duplicolor chrome..just bright enough but not blinding. The wheels were assembled and mounted..finally its a rolling chassis. I ended up squirting the moebius wheels w Duplicolor chrome to tone them down..subtle.20240605_192508.thumb.jpg.8eebd6270a2139180fb8ef2ae8672e35.jpg

A quick mock up to check the body parts still fit.20240605_181351.thumb.jpg.c7d19f217664d9a9b4bfaaad01e68e24.jpg

Wow, that truck is looking sooooooo good. Headache rack looks really appropriate on this truck. Something I want to try is using some really small brass rod to make a U bolt to hold down the headache rack to the frame, going thru a small plate, with maybe a nut under the plate.

@Gary Chastain- thanks ! Thats a great idea for detailing the headache rack. I completely forgot about the hooks when I installed mine..

@Mopar - D thanks ! I've been trying to finish assembly this wknd before I change shifts at work...but didn't make it.

@DRIPTROIT 71 thanks! Appreciate your comments

I was working through the groups of parts all wknd, hoping to wrap it up before Monday. Plumbing the air cooler(?) pipes really slowed me down. I didn't have any large diameter rod, till my brain cells kicked in..the sprues around the kit have plenty!! I bent some sections into pipe, and painted w silver.20240609_164833.thumb.jpg.25d023ce3c6d3255b2e19c4407b47d8a.jpg

I'm not finished w the turbos yet, their way too clean. I want to try some pastel powder to give them the crusty look I see in photos. I tried to replicate the pink antifreeze in the overflow..ehh whatever lol

The cab and hood was cleared, so I started hanging the chrome parts around it.20240609_163311.thumb.jpg.5fbddfdb91cdf812b2aa0641444a0888.jpg

I need to find a top for these air cleaners, one fell into my glue puddle and it ruined the finish.

Thanks for following along! Hopefully I'll have this under glass in the next few days, then it's back to the bottom dump

Nice build!

If you have any hub caps from car kits they normally fit quite well.

I used hubcaps from a 1:16 Chevy Nomad as hubcaps on the rear wheels of my Revell PB Black Magic wrecker! They're about the same diameter as the tops of the air cleaners! Maybe after market If you don't have any!

Well..I didn't mock up everything before paint, and just found out my eyeball fender hack won't work...20240610_145503.thumb.jpg.68ec4dd9dd148ee96cf4d09036daaf07.jpg

I should've looked closer at 1:1 trucks for the right place to cut the fenders loose, I made them too long. So if your following along and plan this...cut the fender extensions longer keeping the hood away from air cleaners...oops

What if you shorten the breathers a little. Can you get the hood to clear that way?
