The problems with BMF (which seemed to correspond with the COVID-19 craziness which affected ever facet of out lives) seem to have been resolved.   For some time now BMF has been back to its original quality.

The biggest problem I have with BMF these days is that it's very hard to know how old any pack you buy from a supplier actually is. It's not like it's in high enough demand that the stock anyone has is cleared in a month or two and replaced with new from the factory on a regular basis. If Tamiya's "stickers" are launching now, then you at least know that any you buy is going to have been recently manufactured in a well-quality-controlled environment.... With BMF there's always the risk you'll open a "fresh" packet from your hobby retailer and find the springy stuff that doesn't stick, or the shiny thin stuff that's covered in wrinkles that just break when you peel it off to apply...

best,

M.

That's true Matt, and the solution is to buy directly from BMF.  Unfortunately for modelers living outside of USA, this is not a viable or cost-effective option.

I'm quite familiar with quality of Tamiya products, and myself a big fan.

Sure, good to have yet another option for adhesive foil, but to me the BMF "chrome" is  without equals in its pliability. I have tried multiple brnads of similar foils, and read and participated in foil reviews here. Well, I will wait until the Tamiya Stickers are on the shelf before I make any more judgements on it. Will it be better than bare metal foil? Who knows, we will just have to wait and try it.

But I know this, all my bare metal foil is pretty dead. The shelf life on it is horrible and hopefully Tamiya has fixed that. Out local IPMS show is on the first of June, and Tamiya will have a booth there. Hopefully they have some on hand to take a look at it.

Welp, in direct response, I bring up this thing:

Now what in the hell would anything like it have to do with spoiled foil?

Mi hermano, the ONLY thing that has kept me sane through this whole exercise, the O-o-O-o-OONNLYY thing that's stopped me short of a spokicidal rage through these needlessly diabolical perversions of a supposedly meditative activity, has been THIS STUFF:

spacer.png

Ju-u-uust tacky enough to hold those Medusa-hairdo spokes down without freezing the wheel so rigid you can't get the next one in.

Might be worth a look before tossing a what, 8-dollar foil sheet? 9?

You prob'ly knew.  Puttin' it out there for the benefit of others, too. ?

EDIT:  'cause yeah, that foil is one of the few recent Tamiya items I can recall having a "meh" response about, too. Here's hoping the pics aren't doing it proper...

Dead? Maybe to you, but there are still lots of us using it.
As for shelf life, I still have some remains of it on a backing sheet which is 30 years old and the adhesive still works (I tested it).  BMF chrome foil is made from some special metal alloy (it is *NOT* just aluminum foil). That makes it more stretchy, which is a huge advantage when foiling complex shaped surfaces.  Aluminum will also stretch but nowhere as much as BMF.

But you're right, we need to wait and see what the Tamiya foil is like, but after trying multiple BMF  imitations, I'm not holding much hope.

If it does not stick to anything, it is dead!

Got to look at it up close today, and it looks good. The sheet is a bit smaller than Bare Metal, and the price seems fair. Overall, I can't wait to try it. He did not have any for sale at the show, they never do.

You get two sheets per package. Also they can't sell you something that technically doesn't exist yet. ?

Ok, it does exist. What is your point?

Did you think they didn't sell you any because they don't like you? Or maybe they just don't have any to sell yet, because there isn't any to sell yet?

Well it exists in a prototype packaging for display at shows, but you can't even buy the stuff in Japan let alone the U.S. - even if Tamiya did sell things at their booth.  Therefore it technically doesn't exist.  The 240Z was at the booth, but unless you are among the chosen who get the white box pre-production kits for advance review you can't buy that either, as it technically doesn't exist.

Whatever dude, it was there, he said it was entering the pipeline, so yeah, I guess it does not exist.

I have it sitting in my PWH, I got it a few weeks ago after HLJ opened up the orders for it after the pre orders were filled, and now its showing discontinued.  Hobby Search on the other hand shows it instock on the Japanese side,  it is a bit odd.

I should have it here by the EOW , just waiting for an instock item to hit so I can ship.

Well, here is the Non Existent, not in production, they won't sell it to me, Tamiya Ultra Thin Aluminum Stickers.

Here I am comparing it to the last piece of good Bare Metal Foil in my possession, Ultra Bright Chrome.

I will try it later and and report my findings, or maybe I will just make something up, eh?

The two sheets together are about 2/3 of the Bare Metal. So the value goes to BMF, but how does it work, well, I don't know yet.

I believe that it is the worst of BMF foils. They came up with it after Detail Master came up with their "chrome" foil as competition (touting that  it is better than BMF chrome).  That stuff actually *IS* aluminum foil, stiff and not the pliable foil that the original Chrome BMF is.  But it is shiner than BMF original chrome. I tried the Detail Master and the BMF Ultra Chrome years ago and ditched them both.  The original chrome BMF still rules my world.

If the Ultra Chrome is the only BMF product you used, then you don't  know what you're missing.

Yes, I have tried every type of BMF made, this is just the last that I have, as I rarely use it since I mostly build race cars.

Aoshima once again has their new line of 180SX kits on display. Billed as a 1996 Type X the black one will be the "Option Wheel" version which is sporting a set of wheels from an R33 GT-R. Gimmicks in the kit include the open/closed headlights and normal/low-down ride heights.
