Allison Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Hi guys Plastic car model kits which do you prefer, Tamiya or Revell brand?
iamsuperdan Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Brand doesn't matter to me. The subject is far more important. But I do like how easily a Tamiya kit goes together. 3 1
atomicholiday Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Same for me. It’s more about subject matter. 1 1

Also, while they seem to have finally gotten past it, Revell had a stretch where a number of their car bodies were visibly “off”. To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that in a Tamiya car kit. Edited July 26, 2024 by Monty 2 1
NOBLNG Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 AMT for me!? Really, like others the subject is the most important thing. I‘ve only built a couple of Tamiya kits and although the fit and quality is excellent, I don’t care much for their instructions. 1 1
Tim W. SoCal Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 If they offered more subject matter that appeals to me, I think that I would prefer Tamiya due to their quality, engineering and fit. I LOVE Revell and Revellogram kits, but I SINCERELY wish they included build options in their kits. (wheels, tires, aftermarket high performance engine parts, etc.) That being said, I have purchased, and continue to purchase, more AMT and MPC kits than the other brands. 1
Bills72sj Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 (edited) Subject matter for sure. I just did a brand count of my inventory. It seems I own slightly more Revell/Monogram but AMT is a close 2nd. However, I have built significantly more AMTs due to the subject matter. (Muscle cars and Semi trucks). Edited August 5, 2024 by Bills72sj
PappyD340 Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 I prefer Revell but I'll build whatever, brand really doesn't matter to me, all brands have their turds!
stavanzer Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 I would build more Tamiya, if I liked the kits they produce. Since I'm not interested in many of the kits they sell, I don't have many Tamiya. I do, however, own a lot of 1/35 scale Tamiya Armour kits. I love the newer ones.
slusher Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 I like AMT kits always have and Round 2 company".. 1
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Brand is of no consequence to me. As a matter of fact, I’m quite partial to old AMT and Johan kits. I’m not building them out of the box anyway, and Tamiya is never, ever going to do those types of subjects. Steve 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 (edited) For me it's all about subject matter. If the only kit I can get of a particular subject is a badly-scaled and misshapen no-name resin mess, I'll go with that IF it looks like it will be less work to correct it than it would be to start with a block of wood. BUT...there's not really all that much overlap of subjects from different manufacturers, so again, as I'm not building models just to pass the time with minimal frustration, kit manufacturer is the least of my concerns. Probably the most overlap occurs with Model A fords, with vintage kits available from AMT, MPC, Revell, and Monogram, recent new-tools from Revell, and now new ones from ICM. To a discerning modeler, they ALL have their warts, but each one also has its particular charm. EDIT: To address the OP's specific question, as far as I recall right at the moment, Tamiya and Revell very rarely (if at all) subject-overlap, so the question is moot from my perspective. rattle can man Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 subject and price are what is important to me. 1
