BK9300 Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 My first recollection of building models dates back to seventh grade (I’m 71, so going back a bit). The kits I chose initially were 1/72 scale airplanes – no particular reason, just fun to build and paint. I remember some MPC model cars along the way as well, and in my late teens found my way to 1/25 scale big rigs. Many unbuilt kits have found their way into my storage over the years, but, as is a familiar storyline in this forum, I lost interest along the way and didn’t make another model until 1991. Later in life, I was a partner in a group of companies that did highway and bridge maintenance for our provincial government and our equipment fleet had loaders, graders, sweepers, dump trucks and of course, plow trucks for the winter road conditions. Starting with a 1/25 Kenworth T600, I built a mostly scratchbuilt version of one of our plow trucks (it turned out ok and I had it in my office until I retired in 2015). In 2010, I had taken a bunch of pictures of one of our, at the time, new trucks and thought I might make a better detailed version of a plow truck. I did start working on the new model’s frame, but much time passed without any progress. In December 2021, I joined MCM forum with the hope of restarting the build, but it wasn’t until January 2023 that I started gathering parts and pieces to work on the plow truck. My wife and I had some renovations done in our house a couple years ago, and I had used Sketchup to 3D model what the changes might look like. I thought I could use Sketchup to model some of the attachments for the plow truck so I could print out projection views of the parts and cut them out of styrene plastic – haven’t found my way to resin printing yet. Instead, I bought a digital Western Star 4900FA, cab and chassis from Hum3D and ended up modeling the whole plow truck in Sketchup. With the help of the Sketchup attachment printouts, I started work on the real model in March 2023. I have always been struck, not only by the variety of skilled modeling displayed in this forum, but by the camaraderie of the modelers presenting. I don’t have social media accounts and have never shared any of my work online, but your forum seems like a welcoming place to do so. I’ve taken a lot of pics of my progress on this model truck over the past year and a half (some time off in between) and will start a WIP topic soon. In the meantime, I’ve added a few views of the Sketchup model truck that I’m using as my guide for the model. 1
iamsuperdan Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Welcome aboard, from the province next door! Looking forward to seeing you build that one. The type of truck I'm very familiar with on the roads around here.
BK9300 Posted July 31, 2024 Author Posted July 31, 2024 Thanks Dan. I likely have a lot to learn about posting properly but I'll get there
Rattlecan Dan Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Welcome Brian. That is some kind of 10 tons of complicated modeling. I wish you much luck in your build. There are some excellent truck and big truck modelers here on the forum who would be only too happy to offer tips and encouragement. Looking forward to your W.I.P pics, and your completed build.
BK9300 Posted July 31, 2024 Author Posted July 31, 2024 Tim, I appreciate the welcome! Donato, it’s a lot to do but I’ve made good progress by making each component - the individual plows, plow support mounts, the sander, etc - all little models in their own right and make sure they all line up to be assembled into the final truck. Will start the WIP in a couple days.

Steve H Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Welcome aboard Brian. Another fellow Canuck here, just across the water from you on the island. You’re off to a great start figuring out the quote for replies. I don’t spend much time over in the big rig section, but I do know there are some extremely talented and very friendly folks over there. Every one here is more than happy to share knowledge tips and tricks. My builds are much better than they were before joining here. Keep an eye on the tips and tricks section, always great stuff there, and post any questions in the Q and A section. Cheers, Steve

Chariots of Fire Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Welcome, Brian. Have been watching your build elsewhere on the forum. That is some serious work and a lot of it! Never a dull moment around here. Don't know much about the north country but you have to get serious snow to put that rig into action. We might need a wing plow now and then but most of our roads are done with single axle and tandem axle trucks with just the front plow. Hope you have a great time on the forum and keep up the good work!

Hope you have a great time on the forum and keep up the good work! Thanks for the kind words, Charles! Have followed many of your incredible builds over the past few years. I continue to be amazed at the encouraging nature of commenters, in all categories on the forum - it is an inspiring environment. I was based in central British Columbia and we got decent amounts of snow. I've got a video made for our company that I should post over in my thread - background music isn't for everyone, but the videography (drone, Go-pro's) of the trucks working was great!
jmk0303 Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Welcome Brian! I worked for a couple of highway departments in upstate New York many years ago. Would love to model some of the trucks I remember. Mostly trucks from the 1950’s to 1980’s back in those days.
