Zippi Posted September 20, 2024 Author Posted September 20, 2024 (edited) Well fellows...I was planning on airbrushing the Seamist green on this morning but unfortunately the masking didn't go well. I first tried regular masking tape, then Tamiya's masking tape, then bmf. I could not get the trim around the headlights and taillights like I wanted. After peeling off the tape from each attempt I managed to mess up the white. I've never had much luck with a two tone paint job. I should have painted it all one color. So, I've lost my patience on this one and it's going back in the box and to the back of the bench for now. Edited September 20, 2024 by Zippi 3
Rattlecan Dan Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Sorry to hear about your troubles Zip. Knowing you, it probably won't stay hidden long.
Duddly01 Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Bummer, I was looking forward to seeing this one. Hopefully you will get back to it in the not so distant future.

Kenmojr Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Digging what your doing with this model....
ModelcarJR Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Bob, the engine and chassis are looking good! You asked about painting two-tones. I always tape mine off twice in the primer to avoid peeling off gloss paint, even from the chrome trim. A chip even in the chrome trim doesn't look good once foiled. Since you have one color coat painted, I would tape off the top edge and the bottom edge with Tamiya tape first, then cut some index card and tape them to the Tamiya tape, again using Tamiya tape preferably. Put the tape on the index card (thick stock, not paper thin), then tape it to the Tamiya tape on the body. I know that will be difficult around the rear fender spears, requiring some bending, but it will keep tape that can leave a mark off the paint that you have just painted, especially if you are using masking tape on the card stock for better adhesion. Also don't forget to tape off the inside for overspray. Each window and the top need to be covered inside. Looking good so far. Keep up the good work! ? ?

I'm not looking to get back on this build any time soon but if I do it will not be a two tone.
ModelcarJR Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Don't let any of what I say scare you off, Bob. Its really not too hard to do. I would let it dry for a couple of days and go for it for the two-tone. Tamiya tape works pretty well and it really won't take too long to tape off. Good Luck! ?
slusher Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Bob, you project is looking great! I do hope everything goes your way!

David G. Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 What you've got done so far on this '57 looks great Bob. Masking them for a two-tone paint job is tricky. If I remember correctly it took me two passes to get the paint laid down on my AMT '57 when I built it earlier this year. That's two full rounds of masking and painting ...for each color! Tape, tape and more tape! It took me almost a whole build session to mask this for the green. Then a second round for the white. Back and front separately. I did use Silly Putty for masking the headlight areas but I still had do do some cleanup after the masking was removed. The masking certainly was a chore but I think it's worth it in the end. I hope you find these pics helpful Bob. If you're interested, here's a link to the WIP. You'll probably remember the build once you get there. Regards and best of luck. David G.
ModelcarJR Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Bob, I apparently posted my comment after you had already damaged your paint. I'm sorry for that, I guess I didn't see the 3rd page or my comment posted at the same time as yours. But I hate to see you give up on the two-tone. I agree with David, tape two times and give the first color a couple of days to dry before taping off for the second color. In my case, I like to use index cards to keep as much tape off of paint as possible. Also, I usually will put on a light coat of clear lacquer over the first coat as the Krylon Lacquer I use dries fast and hard and will prevent damage from the second application of tape to the first coat. You mentioned you had problems around the headlights and taillights. I have built this one before two-tone and here's what I did. The underside of the headlight buckets actually has some primer and is not well painted but nobody will notice. I could have touched up with a brush also and again, nobody will notice. I did a straight line in back which I think looks fine. I try to use lacquer for bodies and this one is painted with Tamiya Light Green Pearl but I used Krylon Ivory, which I am told by Krylon is some sort of acrylic enamel but I have never had any problem with Krylon Clear Lacquer over it. Unfortunately, they no longer make the color, Ivory. I am told that Tamiya Racing White is a good off-white for these 50s two-tones, but I haven't tried it yet. If you can't repair the paint you've already painted, stick it in the oven cleaner and give it another try! You can do it! Good Luck! Here are some pics of what I did. 2

Chuckyg1 Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 I know it's frustrating, but keep at it. You'll be happy once it's done. For what it's worth, here's how I did my two tone few years back. I tried a different spin on the roof as well. Not the best pick, but you get the idea. 1

Zippi Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 (edited) Well...I got back on the 57 and got some color on the body and did a little foil work this morning. I also got all the bright work re-chromed and the front glass in. Edited October 5, 2024 by Zippi 5

Zippi Posted October 6, 2024 Author Posted October 6, 2024 (edited) All the foil work is done and all the glass is in. Starting to put the lens in the bright work and doing another test fit. Just got the taillights installed. The only thing left on the rear is the bumper and license plate. Edited October 6, 2024 by Zippi 4
