The fender gills were actually pretty easy to do once I had figured out a method of fabrication. You got me worried for a moment and I double checked my paint. No burn through but a few spots where my sand & polish has not fully restored the gloss level. I get that sometimes but the seal coat over decals usually evens the gloss quite well. Glad to hear that it was not a burn through!
Pierre Rivard Posted November 3, 2024 Author Posted November 3, 2024 Major milestone. The paint and decals for this body style have been challenging but it all came out good. The seal coat is done and I have good even gloss and no dust particles. Big smiles! 8
JollySipper Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 That looks Really good! The clear kind of made the colors look richer.....
MarkJ Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Wow, Pierre. that looks magnificent. You are right. That final coat really made this build pop, and I see no problem with it at all. Smooth as it can be, and the decals are perfectly placed. Can't wait to see all these parts together and in the under glass forum in your usual final photo shoot production that lends so much interest to the model and what the real car was all about.
1959scudetto Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Paint and decals came out great, Pierre - and these fantastic wheels are the icing on the cake.

I was so worried about my ability to pull off the paint and decals on this monster. I had to get these done before committing to take on the chassis and interior (mostly scratch built) phase of the build. All systems go now! Thanks, but I need to build a chassis and interior first. On 11/3/2024 at 1:53 PM, 1959scudetto said: Paint and decals came out great, Pierre - and these fantastic wheels are the icing on the cake. Wheels from Scale Lab and tires form Tamiya Porsche 956. Huge huge huge improvement over the kit parts. A must do to make this car look right. 2
kensar Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 Really nice looking paint and decal work there, Pierre. 1
BK9300 Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 As always, terrific fabrication being displayed here!
MarkJ Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Roll cage looking perfect, Pierre. I bet you're glad you found those excellent ref pictures.
1959scudetto Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Looking great, Pierre - striving for perfection (as always):

Lot's of work but I enjoy it and happy to see the parts from various sources (or fabricated) cooperating well. On 11/9/2024 at 2:25 PM, MarkJ said: Roll cage looking perfect, Pierre. These pictures are a must because the Otaki kit, other than the body, is not representative so these pictures are my source for fabrication. 22 hours ago, 1959scudetto said: Looking great, Pierre - striving for perfection (as always): Certainly not perfection my friend but I am attempting to add some realism to this replica. Challenging but I really enjoy the task.
Pierre Rivard Posted November 11, 2024 Author Posted November 11, 2024 Doing a bit more chassis fabrication. Exhaust made with with Evergreen 2.0 mm rod, 3.2mm rod or tube, 0.25x1.5 flat. Brake cooling ducts made from 3.2 mm rod with string and plumber's tape wrapped around. 4
MarkJ Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Oh yeah. That flame thrower looks just perfect, and those ducts look very real.
1959scudetto Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Fantastic, Pierre - that is a real tutorial !
Mattilacken Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Nice progress! those ducts looks spot on! have that on the to do list on an other project and i just got inspiration.

No more flames with today's super optimized & hybridized powertrains. New race cars even smell good...or smell nothing at all. Progress? Pierre Rivard Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 And now we have a completed chassis. Chassis pan painted smoke black wit a bit of flat aluminum mixed in. metal components are various tones made from mixes of aluminum, black and gold, then oiled earth washes. Front and rear cradle & suspension elements black with a semi gloss clear over them. 6
JollySipper Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 That looks Super realistic! Especially the bare metal, exhaust and such...... 1
MarkJ Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Wow, Pierre. The exhaust looks like you made it from metal tubing. Great use of the paint mix you came up with. 1
jaymcminn Posted November 18, 2024 Posted November 18, 2024 (edited) That duct technique is ingenious. Going to have to remember that... I might even try it with heat shrink tubing! Edited November 18, 2024 by jaymcminn 1
Pierre Rivard Posted November 21, 2024 Author Posted November 21, 2024 Thank you guys. Now that the chassis is all done I have turned my attention to all the components needed to complete the body and the final phase to follow will be completion of the interior. 3
MarkJ Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Pierre, great catch on the headlamps. That truly would have been noticeable if not addressed. I'm jealous of your checklist. It is readable. Sometimes I go back to mine and can't remember the item I wrote down because I can't read it. Finally figure it out by process of elimination. It's like oh that's what I wrote down and then I fix the garbled letters. My penmanship has always been horrendous.
