Straightliner59 Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Coming along, nicely, Ian! Body is looking great!
Ian McLaren Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Chassis, driver controls to install, steering gear, Oberg oil filter mount, Dzus plates and weight bar. Then the color can be applied 2
Ian McLaren Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 Today is engine day, plug wires injector lines, blower belt idler and some detail painting, this afternoon is fuel pump, barrel valve at start on the throttle linkage. Not much overdrive here (soft tune up) I'll probably change the upper pulley 3
Codi Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Great subject for a build Ian. Love how you just jump in there and whip up a brass chassis too.......I'm just jealous! Cheers, tim
Straightliner59 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 You definitely need more overdrive! Especially racing at elevation.😄
Ian McLaren Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Latest update working on the chassis and building some more details. Body support structure in progress. I also scratch built a 1/16th scale Oberg oil filter for the car, it is comprised of 18 individuals pieces including the two fittings. MVI_0405.MOV 2
AmericanMuscleFan Posted January 26 Posted January 26 WOW, great work on the frame Ian, I wonder why I'm surprised, you're so talented! Good idea to put the oil filter on a dime, it puts everything into perspective! 😊 1
Ian McLaren Posted January 30 Author Posted January 30 (edited) Rough wind shield template completed, now to cut and file fit the permanent windshield engine starting to come together, no clear on the body yet as decaling still in progress Edited January 30 by Ian McLaren 3
Ian McLaren Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 Wheels arrived and chassis is progressing, not too far from paint 2
AmericanMuscleFan Posted February 11 Posted February 11 WOW, the wheels are awesome, your project is going in the right direction my friend! 👍
Codi Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Slow DOWN Ian..........you're flying this one too fast. Great progress most certainly and yes, the wheels, engine, chassis all look spot on. There's so much to consider when doing such a build from scratch and I applaud how you just get after it! cheers, tim

When you can't afford the machines it's nice to know an aerospace machinist. Jeff has supplied me with numerous parts, wheels for three other models, Injector stacks for the Banzai Vega Panel and most notibly the exact Donovan 417 valve covers of my Royal Canadian FED ( the covers alone used up six hours of my time measuring, and remeasuring the real covers). Also the better part of two weeks in machining to get the angles correct and the heights and angles for the four breathers perfect ( they were much taller on this car than what we thought was the norm.

I had been planning this build for decades and had set a timeline, but in a moment of madness I figured I would do it for a build off, Even acknologing with a one off brass chassis it was a long shot as far as time goes. This first coats of clear went on the body this morning and the chassis will be painted this week end . There is still a massive amount to finish up, but I may just make the deadline. Never again!
Ian McLaren Posted February 14 Author Posted February 14 (edited) Progressing on the detail parts, Fuel tank ready to install, had to scratch build this one, no STL File close enough, my welding hasn't gotten any better in 1/16th LOL. The dent in the top of the fuel tank is intentional. I dropped and open end wrench on the real tank between rounds and got my butt thoroughly chewed out. Luckily we won the event and all was mostly forgotton. Edited February 14 by Ian McLaren 2
Ian McLaren Posted February 21 Author Posted February 21 Slowly this thing is progressing, it was never a pretty chassis and drivetrain, pretty much devoid of chrome and color, but it was clean and well taken care of. It was very close to the true meaning of form follows function, a true weapons grade racecar. 1
Straightliner59 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Looks great, Ian! I'm a big fan of "bare bones" and form following function. Nice touch with the fuel tank. Good story!
Ian McLaren Posted February 21 Author Posted February 21 Still progressing, still sitting on the jig but once the radius rods are trimmed to size and instaled it will be free standing. Still lots to do but it's getting closer
Ian McLaren Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Just add the injector, steering gear and a bit of plumbing. Standing on it's own for the first time 1
BK9300 Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Such amazing creations from your work bench - so many details. Even the tires look more rubber like than many I’ve seen. Wonderful results!
Ian McLaren Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 Chassis is done, just waiting for the last coat of clear on the body to cure so this one can be wrapped up. I'll probably return to the BubbleUp cars body for a couple of days as its chassis is also pretty much completed 1
